Preserving East Kalimantan’s Natural Legacy: Astra Agro Subsidiary Wins Award for Tolu Liang Conservation https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2026/02/19/preserving-east-kalimantans-natural-legacy-astra-agro-subsidiary-wins-award-for-tolu-liang-conservation/ https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2026/02/19/preserving-east-kalimantans-natural-legacy-astra-agro-subsidiary-wins-award-for-tolu-liang-conservation/#respond Thu, 19 Feb 2026 06:56:00 +0000 https://www.astra-agro.co.id/?p=22163 PT Sukses Tani Nusasubur (STN), a subsidiary of PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk. (Astra Agro), received an award from the Governor of East Kalimantan for effective management of High Conservation Value (HCV) areas within its plantations.

The award was presented at the 2025 East Kalimantan Plantation Coordination Meeting, organised by the East Kalimantan Provincial Plantation Agency.

STN preserves the Goa Tolu Liang area in Babulu District, North Penajam Paser Regency, maintaining its natural ecosystem.

The protected area with karst rock formations that have formed naturally over thousands of years is still well preserved, including its water sources.

As a result, the area serves as a crucial habitat for local biodiversity.

Ujang Rachmad, Assistant II for Economy and Development of East Kalimantan Province, expressed his appreciation and gratitude to the award recipients.

He emphasised that this achievement was the result of cross-sector collaboration.

“The East Kalimantan Provincial Government highly appreciates the contributions of all parties who have actively promoted the advancement of the plantation sector.

Collaboration like this is the key to inclusive and sustainable regional economic development,” he said.

Similarly, A. Muzakkir, Acting Head of the East Kalimantan Plantation Service, expressed appreciation to all award recipients for their strong commitment to supporting regional plantation development programs. He noted that successful plantation development requires collaboration among multiple parties.

“We would like to express our gratitude and appreciation to all partners, business actors, officials, and farmer groups who have been actively contributing.

“This award is expected to inspire continued innovation and strengthen each party’s role in advancing sustainable and equitable plantations in East Kalimantan,” said Muzakkir.

Triputra, representing PT STN Management, stated that the company consistently applies a science-based approach by using High Conservation Value (HCV) assessment criteria to protect conservation areas.

The company is committed to adopting internationally recognized best practices for identifying, protecting, and managing HCV areas, referencing the Indonesian toolkit and guidelines from the High Conservation Value Network (HCVN).

“We will strive to build synergy between the environment and local communities around our operational areas, for one Indonesia,” he explained.

He explained that the HCV assessment was conducted to support sustainable palm oil plantation management, while prioritizing biodiversity conservation and the area’s ecological functions.

PT STN’s conservation of Tolu Liang Cave maintains natural ecological conditions, with ironwood and meranti trees among the forest vegetation and undisturbed rattan growth.

Eagles and hornbills can still be seen flying across the forest, while gibbons call out each morning from their arboreal habitats.

The presence of these animals indicates that the area’s ecological functions remain intact. Consistent management is essential for maintaining long-term ecological balance.

Eagles and hornbills continue to fly between forest patches, while gibbons sing each morning in their arboreal habitat.

The presence of these animals indicates that the area’s ecological functions are well maintained. Ongoing management is vital for sustaining ecological balance over time.

Karst Landscape Area is in accordance with the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources’ Regulation No. 17 of 2012 concerning the Determination of Karst Landscapes.

This policy aims to regulate the protection of Karst Landscape Areas that function as natural water regulators, preserve Karst Landscape Areas that have unique and scientific value as objects of research and investigation for the development of science, and control the utilisation of Karst Landscape Areas.

Astra Agro has implemented a sustainability policy, including zero deforestation across all operations since 2015.

This sustainability policy is integral to the company and applies to the entire supply chain, including core plantations, plasma plantations, and third-party suppliers.

Astra Agro’s zero deforestation policy has four main points, namely:

First, no development in High Carbon Stock (HCS) forests.
Second, no development in areas with High Conservation Value (HCV).
Third, no burning.
Fourth, reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in plantations.

For information, High Conservation Value (HCV) areas are landscapes that have unique or significant importance in biological, ecological, hydrological, and socio-cultural contexts.

All programs are designed based on social mapping and active dialogue with village governments and community representatives to ensure relevance, inclusivity, and long-term sustainability of benefits.

Anchored in four pillars of social responsibility—education, health, economic empowerment, and environment—Astra Agro is committed to advancing sustainable development and enhancing community welfare. Through these initiatives, the Company consistently seeks to improve quality of life, skills development, and community self-reliance, while safeguarding environmental sustainability and generating added economic value.

In the field of education, Astra Agro provides tangible support through scholarships, incentives for honorary teachers, and the provision of educational facilities and learning support. As of the third quarter of 2025, the Company’s support had reached 13 schools as of September 2025, while also promoting character building and student achievement through non-academic activities. These efforts form a critical foundation for nurturing a more confident and competitive generation of rural youth.

At the same time, community health remains a key priority. Through integrated health service posts (Posyandu), hundreds of pregnant women, toddlers, and elderly residents receive immunizations, routine health check-ups, and supplementary nutrition programs. Beyond service provision, Astra Agro also supports Posyandu cadres through incentives and capacity-building initiatives in several villages, ensuring that community-based healthcare services can operate sustainably and independently.

Within the economic pillar, Astra Agro tailors its approach to the unique potential and characteristics of each region. To strengthen local economies, the Company supports farmer groups, fishermen, livestock breeders, and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in enhancing business value creation. Assistance includes training, optimization of local resources, and facilitation of market access. At PT Agro Nusa Abadi (ANA) in North Morowali, for example, village food security groups are supported through the utilization of empty fruit bunches as organic fertilizer, alongside the development of local products with economic value.

In Donggala Regency, Central Sulawesi, PT Lestari Tani Teladan (LTT) has fostered close engagement with the communities of Towiora and Tinauka Villages through intensive mentoring and participatory discussions. This initiative has revitalized youth engagement through the establishment of a village youth organization (Karang Taruna). Support in the form of mushroom houses and baglog cultivation media has created opportunities for oyster mushroom farming managed independently by village youth, fostering entrepreneurship and strengthening local economic resilience.

PT LTT’s contributions also extend to social infrastructure development. The facilitation of a public cemetery (TPU) in Towiora Village through the provision of heavy equipment, paving blocks, and land certification demonstrates that development initiatives address not only economic aspects but also the social and cultural needs of the community.

Meanwhile, PT Mamuang (MMG) in West Sulawesi has implemented empowerment programs rooted in local wisdom. In Martasari Village, women are supported through the provision of weaving equipment and skills training, opening new economic opportunities while revitalizing traditional practices. Farmer groups in Karya Bersama Village have received training in agricultural product processing to enhance product value addition and market competitiveness.

PT Agro Nusa Abadi (ANA) has also responded to the tangible needs of communities in Bunta, Tompira, and Molino Villages. Farmer groups receive corn seeds and organic fertilizers accompanied by environmentally friendly agricultural training. Fishermen are provided with improved fishing equipment, while women’s groups are encouraged to process agricultural produce into food products with the potential to become sustainable household income sources.

In addition, PT ANA has facilitated access to clean water through the installation of bore wells and water storage tanks that are now utilized by local residents. Riverbank greening initiatives and improvements to village transportation infrastructure further enhance community quality of life while supporting environmental sustainability.

The environmental pillar remains an integral component of Astra Agro’s commitment. As of the third quarter of 2025, the Company has recorded significant progress in environmental rehabilitation programs across various regions, including Central and West Sulawesi. Astra Agro has conducted land rehabilitation and tree planting along riverbanks, coastal areas, and High Conservation Value (HCV) areas, with a cumulative total of more than 22,000 trees planted across nearly 67 hectares.

These initiatives aim to restore ecological functions—such as preventing erosion, maintaining water quality, and strengthening habitat connectivity—while delivering long-term social and economic benefits to surrounding communities. Astra Agro is also actively involved in the formulation of the Peat Ecosystem Protection and Management Plan (RPPEG) of West Sulawesi Province in collaboration with local government authorities and academic institutions.

Through these comprehensive initiatives, Astra Agro reaffirms its belief that operational success cannot be separated from the welfare of surrounding communities. By positioning communities as genuine partners, the Company continues to build an inclusive, resilient, and sustainable development foundation across Sulawesi.

Through its subsidiaries operating across diverse regions, Astra Agro underscores that meaningful development can be realized through programs that are practical, contextual, and responsive to real community needs—directly touching the pulse of community life.

As of the third quarter of 2025, Astra Agro’s community development programs in Sulawesi continue to expand, reaching communities through improved access to education, basic healthcare services, local economic strengthening, and integrated environmental rehabilitation initiatives driven by active community participation.

(Astra Agro), organized health education and safety awareness activities for children within the company’s learning environment. This initiative reflects the company’s commitment to fostering a healthy and safe environment, consistent with its vision for human resource management and social responsibility.

“Health and safety are core values of our company. By fostering understanding from an early age, we hope children will become a generation that values health and safety for themselves, their families, and their communities,” said PT Subur Abadi Plantations Administrator Abdus Syukur.

He emphasized that limited understanding of healthy and safe behaviours at an early age can increase the risk of illness, accidents, and injuries later in life. Direct education combined with practical experience is considered an effective way to develop lasting positive habits in children.

The event opened with a welcome speech and recognition of the participants’ enthusiasm. Dr Vera then presented on dental health, explaining the importance of dental hygiene and demonstrating proper brushing techniques. Through group practice, the children engaged actively and more easily understood the healthy habits to apply in daily life.

Mulyana, a representative from SHE PT Subur Abadi Plantations, presented on driving safety. Children learned about safe practices, including wearing helmets on motorbikes and using seat belts on buses. During hands-on activities, students practiced boarding the bus in an orderly manner, wearing seat belts, and sitting in assigned seats. They were also encouraged to remind their parents to use personal protective equipment at work.

Asrul presented the final session on fire management, explaining that fire can be useful in some situations but is dangerous if uncontrolled. Using a simple visual approach, students learned the importance of promptly reporting large fires to adults to prevent risks.

Through this educational initiative, PT Subur Abadi Plantations aims to instill awareness of healthy living and safety behaviors from an early age. The company expects that children will maintain these habits and share them with their families and communities, contributing to a healthier, safer, and more competitive future generation.

Collaborating for Impact: Astra Agro’s Sustainable Commitment to Stunting Prevention in Jambi https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2026/01/22/collaborating-for-impact-astra-agros-sustainable-commitment-to-stunting-prevention-in-jambi/ https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2026/01/22/collaborating-for-impact-astra-agros-sustainable-commitment-to-stunting-prevention-in-jambi/#respond Thu, 22 Jan 2026 02:40:00 +0000 https://www.astra-agro.co.id/?p=22034 Stunting, or growth failure in infants and toddlers, remains a significant challenge for human resource development. Its primary causes include inadequate nutrition from pregnancy through early childhood, poor sanitation, and insufficient nutrition education.

Due to the complexity of stunting, the government has taken accelerated action. According to the Ministry of State Secretariat and Ministry of Health, the Indonesian government, through the Stunting Reduction Acceleration Team (TP2S), has launched a national programme involving ministries, local governments, private sector partners, and community participation. This collaboration is essential for sustainable stunting reduction.

To support the government’s programme, PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk (Astra Agro) in Jambi and the Jambi Provincial Government have prioritized stunting reduction by promoting planned, measurable interventions with all stakeholders.

Jambi Governor Al Haris emphasized that stunting affects not only health but also the region’s future. He called on all sectors to actively support the stunting reduction action plan.

‘All parties must work together and coordinate to ensure this programme’s success, and foster parents play a vital role in every region,’ he said at the opening of the Performance Assessment of Convergence Action for the Acceleration of Stunting Reduction in Regencies and Cities throughout Jambi Province.

At the grassroots level, stunting reduction is achieved through cross-sector collaboration. Astra Agro, a palm oil plantation company in Merangin and Sarolangun Regencies, supports this effort through community empowerment programmes.

‘Astra Agro is one of the sectors that continues to be present through various sustainability commitments, primarily through its foster parent programme,’ added Al Haris.

In 2025, Astra Agro in Jambi implemented a range of community-based health programmes. The company believes that preventing stunting requires long-term support, not just temporary assistance. Through its health-focused social responsibility initiatives, Astra Agro has established 35 integrated health service posts (posyandu) in its operational areas and six special posyandu for the Suku Anak Dalam (SAD) community.

The role of posyandu has expanded beyond basic health services to support community empowerment. By the end of 2025, Astra Agro will continue to enhance health facilities and services for the SAD community, ensuring posyandu can address broader needs.

According to Slamet Riyadi, Assistant Corporate Social Responsibility at Astra Agro in Jambi, these service improvements are designed to support all life stages. ‘Starting from pregnant women, postpartum and breastfeeding mothers, infants, toddlers, preschoolers, school-age children, adolescents, adults, to the elderly,’ he explained.

In addition, the company also pays attention to improving the quality of health workers through training and mentoring for doctors, nurses, and posyandu cadres.

It is in these posyandu that stories of gradual change are unfolding, with increasingly trained cadres, children who regularly receive nutritious supplementary food, and increasingly adequate health facilities. Together with the local community health centre, the company also operates a mobile health centre service that reaches 241 households and provides a special ambulance for the SAD community, who have had difficulty accessing health services.

This consistent presence and sustainable approach did not go unnoticed by the local government. In October 2025, the Merangin Regency Government recognised Astra Agro’s active role in accelerating the reduction of stunting. This recognition was further reinforced by the awarding of the Piagam Orang Tua Asuh Cegah Stunting (GENTING) from the Jambi Provincial BKKBN in December 2025.

The company’s efforts do not stop at the health pillar. Astra Agro’s subsidiary in Jambi also supports the government’s programme to maintain food security, an important foundation for preventing stunting. Throughout 2025, the company distributed 34.65 tonnes of rice and 2,979 food packages to more than 331 households and SAD communities in Merangin and Sarolangun Regencies.

For the company, the meaning of food security does not stop at giving; it also involves accompanying and empowering. To that end, Astra Agro, together with the SAD community and farmer groups, initiated the planting of 600 jengkol tree seedlings, the cultivation of lemongrass, and the development of freshwater fisheries.

Education then became the next important chapter in this series of efforts. By 2025, the company will have mentored 13 schools in Merangin and Sarolangun, accompanying 412 students and 16 educators. For SAD children who must leave the forest to pursue formal education, the company provides Wisma Madu Rimbo, a shelter for SAD children from primary to secondary school levels.

Slamet emphasised that the business world is inseparable from the pulse of regional life. He hopes that the collaboration built so far will continue, so that development not only grows but also has a real impact on the community.

Inspiring Growth Through Art: Astra Agro’s Commitment to Children’s Development Journey https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2026/01/21/inspiring-growth-through-art-astra-agros-commitment-to-childrens-development-journey/ https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2026/01/21/inspiring-growth-through-art-astra-agros-commitment-to-childrens-development-journey/#respond Wed, 21 Jan 2026 01:30:00 +0000 https://www.astra-agro.co.id/?p=22031 Art education in schools, particularly at the early childhood and primary levels, plays a significant role in shaping children’s character and fostering a broad spectrum of skills. Although frequently regarded as a recreational activity, art serves as an effective medium for supporting children’s cognitive, emotional, motor, and social development.

This perspective is demonstrated in the Art and Creativity Performance by students from Awal Mulia Kindergarten and Kimia Tirta Utama Elementary School. Supported by PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk (Astra Agro) in Riau, these schools successfully organised an event featuring a diverse array of performances, including traditional and modern dances and regional song competitions.

During the primary school years, children experience a critical stage of development as they begin to comprehend their social and emotional environments. At this stage, arts education provides a valuable medium for expressing emotions and imagination that may be challenging to articulate verbally.

Accordingly, the art performance was structured as a platform for expression and contextual learning, encouraging children to perform confidently, collaborate, appreciate diversity, and develop empathy from an early age. Each student’s performance conveyed messages addressing significant social issues, including anti-bullying, cultural diversity, and healthy lifestyles. These values were introduced in an engaging and age-appropriate manner.

The Sub-district Education Coordinator (Korwilcam) of Koto Gasib Sub-district, Sutikno, who attended the event, commended the schools’ efforts to integrate art into the educational process. He stated that each form of art offers children opportunities for holistic development, encompassing cognitive, emotional, and social growth.

‘This performance represents an ideal culmination of the learning process, particularly as it takes place just before the school holidays. The children have acquired valuable experiences that are not always accessible in every school. Congratulations to all students, teachers, and organizations who have supported the performance and the educational process to date,’ said Sutikno.

The Art and Creativity Performance by students of TK Awal Mulia and SDS Kimia Tirta Utama forms part of Astra Agro’s ongoing commitment to enhancing educational quality. Through such activities, schools are expected to become safe, inclusive, and inspiring learning environments that foster a young generation characterized by creativity, strong values, and competitiveness.

This commitment is also reflected in SDS Kimia Tirta Utama’s achievement at the national level, where it was awarded the National Adiwiyata School title. This achievement was born of the school’s consistent implementation of various flagship environmental programmes, including the separation of organic and inorganic waste, cultivation of medicinal plants (TOGA), construction of greenhouses, and establishment of a smoke-free zone in the school environment.

Masrikan, Principal of SDS Kimia Tirta Utama, said that the school’s success is inseparable from students’ enthusiasm for learning and for developing their potential, not only in the academic field.

‘The support of parents as primary educators at home, along with ongoing guidance from Astra Agro, are key factors in advancing the school’s progress and optimizing student growth and development,’ he concluded.

PT GSPP provided heavy equipment, including motor graders and compactors, to support repairs on the Amin Jaya–Sukamandang village road.

This two-kilometre road serves as the primary link between the villages and is essential for economic, educational, and daily activities.

The road’s previous condition caused frequent difficulties for residents, particularly during the rainy season, affecting both comfort and safety.

Improving Economic and Social Access

Sri Wahyuni, Chief of Amin Jaya Village, expressed appreciation for PT GSPP’s support, noting that the assistance directly improved economic and social access for both Amin Jaya and Sukamandang communities.

“This road is not only important for the residents of the two villages, but also for the two sub-districts in Kobar Regency and Seruyan. With the heavy equipment support from PT GSPP, the repair process can be completed more quickly, and the results are significantly better. We express our gratitude for the company’s concern for the community’s needs,” she said.

This assistance is expected to expedite repairs and enhance the road’s quality, ensuring it is safer and more comfortable for residents.

Astra Agro Subsidiary Supports Coastal Protection through Mangrove Rehabilitation https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2026/01/20/astra-agro-subsidiary-supports-coastal-protection-through-mangrove-rehabilitation/ https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2026/01/20/astra-agro-subsidiary-supports-coastal-protection-through-mangrove-rehabilitation/#respond Tue, 20 Jan 2026 03:12:00 +0000 https://www.astra-agro.co.id/?p=21996 On a recent morning, a fisherman’s small boat navigated the dense mangrove corridors along the coast of Aceh Singkil, Aceh Province. The robust mangrove roots stabilized the mud and waves, while providing essential habitats for crabs, fish, and shellfish, which have become increasingly abundant. For local residents, this transformation represents not only a revitalized landscape but also the gradual restoration of their primary source of livelihood. “Before the mangroves grew like this, we often returned home with little catch.

“Now, almost every day we can get fish and mangrove crabs to sell or consume ourselves,” stated Afrizal, a local fisherman. He noted that the rehabilitated mangrove area has stabilized fish catches and enhanced coastal security, as the shoreline is now less susceptible to erosion. This ecological recovery is a result of a mangrove rehabilitation program initiated by PT Perkebunan Lembah Bhakti (PLB), a subsidiary of PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk, since 2018.

By 2025, the company aims to have planted 51,000 mangrove trees across approximately 14.73 hectares, including a recent addition of 5,000 trees on 2 hectares. These initiatives contribute to coastal restoration and foster new opportunities for community engagement with the natural environment. Additionally, a group of high school students actively participated in planting mangrove seedlings, gaining practical experience in environmental conservation.

“Usually, we only learn from books. Here, we see firsthand how mangroves can protect the coast and serve as a home for many animals,” remarked a student from SMA Negeri 1 Gunung Meriah, who participated in the mangrove planting organized by PT PLB. The student expressed hope that such activities would increase environmental awareness among the younger generation. Surkani, Head of the Environment Agency (DLH) of Aceh Singkil Regency, also commended this collaborative initiative.

The mangrove rehabilitation program implemented by PT PLB in collaboration with the community and students exemplifies effective synergy in coastal environmental protection. Surkani noted that the program’s impact extends beyond ecological benefits to include social and economic improvements. He emphasized that mangroves are vital for climate change mitigation, as they absorb carbon and protect coastlines from erosion. “Not many can consistently preserve the environment, but PT PLB has been able to carry out this commitment since 2018.

He further highlighted the significant initiative of involving the education sector directly in the program. Monitoring in the rehabilitation area indicates healthy mangrove growth and increased biodiversity, including various species of birds, mammals, and reptiles. These findings suggest that the rehabilitation efforts are effective and offer long-term benefits to the coastal ecosystem.

“Ecosystem balance is Astra Agro’s primary commitment in maintaining sustainable business operations,” stated PT PLB Administrator M. Asrar Iqbal. He explained that the mangrove rehabilitation initiative is one of several programs supporting this commitment. For coastal communities, mangroves represent both environmental preservation and future security. “If the mangroves are preserved, our children will still be able to fish in the same place and live off a healthy sea,” Afrizal added. This optimism grows alongside the mangrove roots now firmly established in Aceh Singkil’s coastal soil. Through its ongoing mangrove rehabilitation program, PT PLB reaffirms its dedication to generating positive outcomes for both the environment and the community. The thriving mangroves today symbolize hope for future generations.
