All programs are designed based on social mapping and active dialogue with village governments and community representatives to ensure relevance, inclusivity, and long-term sustainability of benefits.

Anchored in four pillars of social responsibility—education, health, economic empowerment, and environment—Astra Agro is committed to advancing sustainable development and enhancing community welfare. Through these initiatives, the Company consistently seeks to improve quality of life, skills development, and community self-reliance, while safeguarding environmental sustainability and generating added economic value.

In the field of education, Astra Agro provides tangible support through scholarships, incentives for honorary teachers, and the provision of educational facilities and learning support. As of the third quarter of 2025, the Company’s support had reached 13 schools as of September 2025, while also promoting character building and student achievement through non-academic activities. These efforts form a critical foundation for nurturing a more confident and competitive generation of rural youth.

At the same time, community health remains a key priority. Through integrated health service posts (Posyandu), hundreds of pregnant women, toddlers, and elderly residents receive immunizations, routine health check-ups, and supplementary nutrition programs. Beyond service provision, Astra Agro also supports Posyandu cadres through incentives and capacity-building initiatives in several villages, ensuring that community-based healthcare services can operate sustainably and independently.

Within the economic pillar, Astra Agro tailors its approach to the unique potential and characteristics of each region. To strengthen local economies, the Company supports farmer groups, fishermen, livestock breeders, and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in enhancing business value creation. Assistance includes training, optimization of local resources, and facilitation of market access. At PT Agro Nusa Abadi (ANA) in North Morowali, for example, village food security groups are supported through the utilization of empty fruit bunches as organic fertilizer, alongside the development of local products with economic value.

In Donggala Regency, Central Sulawesi, PT Lestari Tani Teladan (LTT) has fostered close engagement with the communities of Towiora and Tinauka Villages through intensive mentoring and participatory discussions. This initiative has revitalized youth engagement through the establishment of a village youth organization (Karang Taruna). Support in the form of mushroom houses and baglog cultivation media has created opportunities for oyster mushroom farming managed independently by village youth, fostering entrepreneurship and strengthening local economic resilience.

PT LTT’s contributions also extend to social infrastructure development. The facilitation of a public cemetery (TPU) in Towiora Village through the provision of heavy equipment, paving blocks, and land certification demonstrates that development initiatives address not only economic aspects but also the social and cultural needs of the community.

Meanwhile, PT Mamuang (MMG) in West Sulawesi has implemented empowerment programs rooted in local wisdom. In Martasari Village, women are supported through the provision of weaving equipment and skills training, opening new economic opportunities while revitalizing traditional practices. Farmer groups in Karya Bersama Village have received training in agricultural product processing to enhance product value addition and market competitiveness.

PT Agro Nusa Abadi (ANA) has also responded to the tangible needs of communities in Bunta, Tompira, and Molino Villages. Farmer groups receive corn seeds and organic fertilizers accompanied by environmentally friendly agricultural training. Fishermen are provided with improved fishing equipment, while women’s groups are encouraged to process agricultural produce into food products with the potential to become sustainable household income sources.

In addition, PT ANA has facilitated access to clean water through the installation of bore wells and water storage tanks that are now utilized by local residents. Riverbank greening initiatives and improvements to village transportation infrastructure further enhance community quality of life while supporting environmental sustainability.

The environmental pillar remains an integral component of Astra Agro’s commitment. As of the third quarter of 2025, the Company has recorded significant progress in environmental rehabilitation programs across various regions, including Central and West Sulawesi. Astra Agro has conducted land rehabilitation and tree planting along riverbanks, coastal areas, and High Conservation Value (HCV) areas, with a cumulative total of more than 22,000 trees planted across nearly 67 hectares.

These initiatives aim to restore ecological functions—such as preventing erosion, maintaining water quality, and strengthening habitat connectivity—while delivering long-term social and economic benefits to surrounding communities. Astra Agro is also actively involved in the formulation of the Peat Ecosystem Protection and Management Plan (RPPEG) of West Sulawesi Province in collaboration with local government authorities and academic institutions.

Through these comprehensive initiatives, Astra Agro reaffirms its belief that operational success cannot be separated from the welfare of surrounding communities. By positioning communities as genuine partners, the Company continues to build an inclusive, resilient, and sustainable development foundation across Sulawesi.

Through its subsidiaries operating across diverse regions, Astra Agro underscores that meaningful development can be realized through programs that are practical, contextual, and responsive to real community needs—directly touching the pulse of community life.

As of the third quarter of 2025, Astra Agro’s community development programs in Sulawesi continue to expand, reaching communities through improved access to education, basic healthcare services, local economic strengthening, and integrated environmental rehabilitation initiatives driven by active community participation.

Collaborating for Impact: Astra Agro’s Sustainable Commitment to Stunting Prevention in Jambi https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2026/01/22/collaborating-for-impact-astra-agros-sustainable-commitment-to-stunting-prevention-in-jambi/ https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2026/01/22/collaborating-for-impact-astra-agros-sustainable-commitment-to-stunting-prevention-in-jambi/#respond Thu, 22 Jan 2026 02:40:00 +0000 https://www.astra-agro.co.id/?p=22034 Stunting, or growth failure in infants and toddlers, remains a significant challenge for human resource development. Its primary causes include inadequate nutrition from pregnancy through early childhood, poor sanitation, and insufficient nutrition education.

Due to the complexity of stunting, the government has taken accelerated action. According to the Ministry of State Secretariat and Ministry of Health, the Indonesian government, through the Stunting Reduction Acceleration Team (TP2S), has launched a national programme involving ministries, local governments, private sector partners, and community participation. This collaboration is essential for sustainable stunting reduction.

To support the government’s programme, PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk (Astra Agro) in Jambi and the Jambi Provincial Government have prioritized stunting reduction by promoting planned, measurable interventions with all stakeholders.

Jambi Governor Al Haris emphasized that stunting affects not only health but also the region’s future. He called on all sectors to actively support the stunting reduction action plan.

‘All parties must work together and coordinate to ensure this programme’s success, and foster parents play a vital role in every region,’ he said at the opening of the Performance Assessment of Convergence Action for the Acceleration of Stunting Reduction in Regencies and Cities throughout Jambi Province.

At the grassroots level, stunting reduction is achieved through cross-sector collaboration. Astra Agro, a palm oil plantation company in Merangin and Sarolangun Regencies, supports this effort through community empowerment programmes.

‘Astra Agro is one of the sectors that continues to be present through various sustainability commitments, primarily through its foster parent programme,’ added Al Haris.

In 2025, Astra Agro in Jambi implemented a range of community-based health programmes. The company believes that preventing stunting requires long-term support, not just temporary assistance. Through its health-focused social responsibility initiatives, Astra Agro has established 35 integrated health service posts (posyandu) in its operational areas and six special posyandu for the Suku Anak Dalam (SAD) community.

The role of posyandu has expanded beyond basic health services to support community empowerment. By the end of 2025, Astra Agro will continue to enhance health facilities and services for the SAD community, ensuring posyandu can address broader needs.

According to Slamet Riyadi, Assistant Corporate Social Responsibility at Astra Agro in Jambi, these service improvements are designed to support all life stages. ‘Starting from pregnant women, postpartum and breastfeeding mothers, infants, toddlers, preschoolers, school-age children, adolescents, adults, to the elderly,’ he explained.

In addition, the company also pays attention to improving the quality of health workers through training and mentoring for doctors, nurses, and posyandu cadres.

It is in these posyandu that stories of gradual change are unfolding, with increasingly trained cadres, children who regularly receive nutritious supplementary food, and increasingly adequate health facilities. Together with the local community health centre, the company also operates a mobile health centre service that reaches 241 households and provides a special ambulance for the SAD community, who have had difficulty accessing health services.

This consistent presence and sustainable approach did not go unnoticed by the local government. In October 2025, the Merangin Regency Government recognised Astra Agro’s active role in accelerating the reduction of stunting. This recognition was further reinforced by the awarding of the Piagam Orang Tua Asuh Cegah Stunting (GENTING) from the Jambi Provincial BKKBN in December 2025.

The company’s efforts do not stop at the health pillar. Astra Agro’s subsidiary in Jambi also supports the government’s programme to maintain food security, an important foundation for preventing stunting. Throughout 2025, the company distributed 34.65 tonnes of rice and 2,979 food packages to more than 331 households and SAD communities in Merangin and Sarolangun Regencies.

For the company, the meaning of food security does not stop at giving; it also involves accompanying and empowering. To that end, Astra Agro, together with the SAD community and farmer groups, initiated the planting of 600 jengkol tree seedlings, the cultivation of lemongrass, and the development of freshwater fisheries.

Education then became the next important chapter in this series of efforts. By 2025, the company will have mentored 13 schools in Merangin and Sarolangun, accompanying 412 students and 16 educators. For SAD children who must leave the forest to pursue formal education, the company provides Wisma Madu Rimbo, a shelter for SAD children from primary to secondary school levels.

Slamet emphasised that the business world is inseparable from the pulse of regional life. He hopes that the collaboration built so far will continue, so that development not only grows but also has a real impact on the community.

Inspiring Growth Through Art: Astra Agro’s Commitment to Children’s Development Journey https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2026/01/21/inspiring-growth-through-art-astra-agros-commitment-to-childrens-development-journey/ https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2026/01/21/inspiring-growth-through-art-astra-agros-commitment-to-childrens-development-journey/#respond Wed, 21 Jan 2026 01:30:00 +0000 https://www.astra-agro.co.id/?p=22031 Art education in schools, particularly at the early childhood and primary levels, plays a significant role in shaping children’s character and fostering a broad spectrum of skills. Although frequently regarded as a recreational activity, art serves as an effective medium for supporting children’s cognitive, emotional, motor, and social development.

This perspective is demonstrated in the Art and Creativity Performance by students from Awal Mulia Kindergarten and Kimia Tirta Utama Elementary School. Supported by PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk (Astra Agro) in Riau, these schools successfully organised an event featuring a diverse array of performances, including traditional and modern dances and regional song competitions.

During the primary school years, children experience a critical stage of development as they begin to comprehend their social and emotional environments. At this stage, arts education provides a valuable medium for expressing emotions and imagination that may be challenging to articulate verbally.

Accordingly, the art performance was structured as a platform for expression and contextual learning, encouraging children to perform confidently, collaborate, appreciate diversity, and develop empathy from an early age. Each student’s performance conveyed messages addressing significant social issues, including anti-bullying, cultural diversity, and healthy lifestyles. These values were introduced in an engaging and age-appropriate manner.

The Sub-district Education Coordinator (Korwilcam) of Koto Gasib Sub-district, Sutikno, who attended the event, commended the schools’ efforts to integrate art into the educational process. He stated that each form of art offers children opportunities for holistic development, encompassing cognitive, emotional, and social growth.

‘This performance represents an ideal culmination of the learning process, particularly as it takes place just before the school holidays. The children have acquired valuable experiences that are not always accessible in every school. Congratulations to all students, teachers, and organizations who have supported the performance and the educational process to date,’ said Sutikno.

The Art and Creativity Performance by students of TK Awal Mulia and SDS Kimia Tirta Utama forms part of Astra Agro’s ongoing commitment to enhancing educational quality. Through such activities, schools are expected to become safe, inclusive, and inspiring learning environments that foster a young generation characterized by creativity, strong values, and competitiveness.

This commitment is also reflected in SDS Kimia Tirta Utama’s achievement at the national level, where it was awarded the National Adiwiyata School title. This achievement was born of the school’s consistent implementation of various flagship environmental programmes, including the separation of organic and inorganic waste, cultivation of medicinal plants (TOGA), construction of greenhouses, and establishment of a smoke-free zone in the school environment.

Masrikan, Principal of SDS Kimia Tirta Utama, said that the school’s success is inseparable from students’ enthusiasm for learning and for developing their potential, not only in the academic field.

‘The support of parents as primary educators at home, along with ongoing guidance from Astra Agro, are key factors in advancing the school’s progress and optimizing student growth and development,’ he concluded.

Honoring Mothers, Empowering Generations: Astra Agro Celebrates Mother’s Day in Pasangkayu https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2025/12/29/honoring-mothers-empowering-generations-astra-agro-celebrates-mothers-day-in-pasangkayu/ https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2025/12/29/honoring-mothers-empowering-generations-astra-agro-celebrates-mothers-day-in-pasangkayu/#respond Mon, 29 Dec 2025 09:15:00 +0000 https://www.astra-agro.co.id/?p=21803 Mother’s Day, celebrated annually on December 22nd, serves as a national occasion to honor the significant role and enduring contributions of Indonesian women throughout the nation’s history. This day is not only a celebration of love but also a reflection on the struggles and achievements of women in Indonesia.

Mother’s Day was established to commemorate the First Indonesian Women’s Congress, which took place on December 22, 1928, in Yogyakarta. This congress marked a significant milestone, as women from diverse backgrounds convened to advocate for shared interests, including education, health, children’s rights, and women’s contributions to the national independence movement.

PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk (Astra Agro), through its subsidiary in West Sulawesi, initiated the National Mother’s Day commemoration by organizing a series of talk shows and health education activities at the community level.

This event provided an important opportunity for posyandu cadres, who consistently deliver health services to community members in Astra Agro’s operational areas, to convene and collaborate.

The series of events, held on Tuesday, December 22nd, was attended by approximately 300 internal and external posyandu cadres mentored by Astra Agro in West Sulawesi. Despite the rainy weather, participants remained enthusiastic and engaged throughout the event.

The event, themed “From Mother’s Embrace and Father’s Support, Healthy and Strong Children Grow,” aimed to enhance the role of posyandu cadres in supporting maternal and child health. Activities focused on growth and development monitoring, nutrition education, and strengthening parenting practices as concrete measures to prevent growth failure and stunting.

Astra Agro collaborated with the Inisiasi Muda community from Tikke Raya Village, Pasangkayu Regency, which serves as its fostered community. Inisiasi Muda is a youth organization actively engaged in environmental and social initiatives, consistently demonstrating commitment through activities such as the Posyandu Cadre Talkshow in partnership with Astra Agro.

In partnership with the Breastfeeding Care Community, Astra Agro and Inisiasi Muda invited two pediatric specialists from the Regional General Hospital and the Head of the BKKBN Office to serve as speakers for the talk show.

dr. Andi Handriyati, a pediatrician at AKO Regional General Hospital in Pasangkayu Regency, expressed pride in participating in an initiative with a positive community impact. “This remarkable initiative from corporations and rural youth for the nation’s future generation on this special Mother’s Day,” she said.

dr. Andi emphasized that, as a working mother, ensuring her child’s optimal physical, mental, and emotional growth is essential. She also highlighted the critical role of posyandu cadres as the primary providers of community health services, noting the positive synergy achieved through these events and talk shows.Fatur Rachman Hidayat, chairman of Inisiasi Muda, underscored the importance of collaboration among companies, local governments, and community organizations. “We hope this activity will not only broaden our horizons but also strengthen our shared commitment,” said Fatur.

The initiative by Astra Agro’s subsidiary in West Sulawesi is part of a broader series of programs implemented by all Astra Agro subsidiaries across their operational regions, reflecting the company’s commitment to social responsibility in the health sector.

In 2024, Astra Agro has implemented programs to support government efforts to improve health outcomes, primarily through Community Health Activity Centers (PK2M) based on the Posyandu model.

PK2M activities encompass mentoring, education, and the provision of facilities and infrastructure support to 335 Posyandu across villages within Astra Agro’s operational areas. Additionally, Astra Agro has distributed supplementary feeding (PMT) and vitamins to 3,342 pregnant women and 18,570 infants and toddlers in these communities.

Consistent with the objectives of the Mother’s Day commemoration activities in West Sulawesi, the company has also provided support to address stunting among children in its operational areas.

Early Detection Saves Lives: Lovepink and Astra Agro Collaborate to Prevent Breast Cancer in Central Kalimantan https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2025/12/16/early-detection-saves-lives-lovepink-and-astra-agro-collaborate-to-prevent-breast-cancer-in-central-kalimantan/ https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2025/12/16/early-detection-saves-lives-lovepink-and-astra-agro-collaborate-to-prevent-breast-cancer-in-central-kalimantan/#respond Tue, 16 Dec 2025 09:44:53 +0000 https://www.astra-agro.co.id/?p=21712 On a bright Saturday morning, the sports arena hall on the palm oil plantation was filled with women and children. The hall, typically used for exercise, hosted the Pink Talk program, an initiative of the Lovepink Indonesia Foundation aimed at promoting breast cancer prevention and early detection.

Astra Agro invited representatives from villages within a 1 km radius of the plantations, including Pandu Sanjaya, Sidomulyo, Sungai Bengkoang, Pangkalan Tiga, and Runtu, to a socialization event at PT Gunung Sejahtera Dua Indah (GSDI) in Central Kalimantan. The company also invited healthcare workers from the Polibun (Plantation Polyclinic), including doctors, nurses, and Posyandu (integrated health service post) cadres from both inside and outside the company, as well as the PERISKA community.Promoting breast cancer prevention in Astra Agro subsidiaries is crucial, especially for communities near the plantations. According to the Global Cancer Observatory (GLOBOCAN), breast cancer is the leading cause of death among women in Indonesia, largely due to late detection, myths, and negative stigma.

“A number of staff and healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, and Posyandu (intergrated health post) volunteers from all Astra Agro subsidiaries in Central Kalimantan attended the Pink Talk event and engaged in the socialization session.”

“Many people assume breast cancer only affects women with a family history, but there are many other factors, such as hormones, diet, and psychological conditions,” said Nyoman Christiany Yudha, a member of Lovepink Indonesia and a breast cancer survivor.

Early detection can be achieved through SADARI (Breast Self-Examination) and SADANIS (Clinical Breast Examination). The Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia reports that about 85% of breast abnormalities are first detected by women through proper SADARI. This self-exam can be performed at home, ideally 7 to 10 days after menstruation, when the breasts are softer and more tender. When abnormalities are found during a breast self-exam or in women over 40, a clinical breast exam by a healthcare professional is strongly recommended. Early detection significantly increases the chances of recovery.

“Female participants took part in a collective practice of SADARI movements as part of the monthly breast cancer screening.”

Raising awareness is not solely the responsibility of women; support from family and the community is also essential. For example, a husband’s encouragement for regular checkups is a valuable first step.

“Through the village representatives present, we will help disseminate the knowledge from Lovepink to other village residents after returning from this event,” emphasized Suyamto, Head of Pangkalan Tiga Village, West Kotawaringin Regency. According to him, knowledge about early detection and prevention of breast cancer is very valuable, especially for communities in rural and remote areas of Central Kalimantan. This event marks the fourth annual collaboration between Astra Agro and Lovepink Indonesia, following previous programs in Riau, Central Sulawesi, and West Sulawesi. The partnership commenced at the onset of the pandemic, with online sessions reaching all Astra Agro operational areas in Sumatra, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi, as well as other initiatives outlined in the following Sustainability Aspiration article.

“Mr. Suyamto, The Village Chief of Pangkalan Tiga Village, actively participated in the Q&A session on early breast cancer detection.”

Through ongoing collaboration with Lovepink Indonesia, we aim to expand education and prevention efforts, reach a wider audience, and foster collective awareness of the importance of breast cancer prevention and early detection. These efforts are key to reducing advanced-stage breast cancer cases in remote areas of Indonesia.

These spaces nurture communities that grow through shared values, compassion, and sustainable self-reliance.

Paguyuban Kencana Lestari

At PT Gunung Sejahtera Putri Perdana (GSPP) in Central Kalimantan, the Kencana Lestari Paguyuban has grown into a close-knit community. Led by Chairman Dimas Saputra, it embodies a strong spirit of togetherness and social responsibility.

The community or paguyuban as it is called in Indonesian is founded on mutual support and growth. Its flagship programs, such as Zero Accident and Safety Agent, demonstrate a commitment to making safety a core value rather than just a slogan.

“Safety starts at home” is their guiding slogan. By applying the Triple S principle; Pre-work, Work, and Post-work safety—security becomes an integral part of their culture.

Between their daily routines, they preserve cultural values. Through the neighborhood watch (Siskamling) of Temu Paguyuban, residents strengthen their sense of security and solidarity. The kuda lumping dance has also become a rooted space for cultural expression, uniting residents across generations in a spirit of cooperation.

Economic independence is another key pillar. Through independent MSMEs, residents produce herbal medicine, tiwul rice, cassava chips, and operate hair salon services collaboratively. Environmentally, the Biopori program demonstrates care for the earth and complements the Religious Landfill, reinforcing the community’s moral and spiritual values.

Paguyuban Hidup Baru

This association exemplifies how the four pillars of social responsibility—health, education, economy, and environment—are integrated into daily life. In Laburan Village, Paser Regency, East Kalimantan, the Paguyuban Hidup Baru community, supported by PT Borneo Indah Marjaya (BIM), demonstrates how synergy and sustainability can be achieved collectively.

This association focuses on three main pillars: Safe, Healthy, and Green. Safety agents, regular night patrols, and safety signs demonstrate a commitment to making safety a daily practice.

In the health sector, they operate community health posts, mosquito control programs, and the Ready to Work (RTW) program, which encourages residents to maintain physical fitness. Joint sports activities and supplementary food (PMT) further promote healthy living.

The Waste Bank program, which has been active since 2021, transforms waste into economic resources and educates residents about environmental responsibility. It has partnered with the East Kalimantan Environmental Agency and received a provincial-level Proklim award.

Through environmental initiatives, residents develop Paguyuban Mandiri MSMEs, producing banana chips, herbal drinks, and handicrafts. All profits are reinvested for the benefit of the community. The New Life Association promotes healthy habits, environmental harmony, and community independence.

Paguyuban Hotel Berseri

In Riau, the Paguyuban Hotel Berseri, supported by PT Kimia Tirta Utama (KTU), fosters a spirit of togetherness. With a vision for a green, harmonious, healthy, safe, and productive environment, the association builds strong relationships among residents, nature, and companies.

This community is built on four pillars: Healthy, Safe, Green, and Prosperous. Through the Hotel Berseri Sehat program, they support residents’ health with the Anggrek Posyandu, herbal gardens, and weekly exercise for mothers. A fitness center is also available as a community resource.

For the Safe pillar, a Safety Culture is promoted through the Safety Commitment Monument, routine PPE inspections, and the Ready to Work program. As a result, PT KTU maintained its Zero Accident status through 2025.

The Green Pillar program encourages community creativity. Through the LIMBAH initiative (See, Initiate, Utilize, Create, and Present solutions), used gallon containers are repurposed as plant pots, old tires become fences and monuments, and organic waste is processed into compost. These efforts help create a vibrant and sustainable environment.

Under the Prosperity pillar, residents engage in goat trading, catfish farming, ginger powder production, and cultivating gardens for fresh vegetables. These activities enhance well-being and strengthen community bonds.

These three communities, Paguyuban Kencana Lestari, Paguyuban Hidup Baru, and Paguyuban Hotel Berseri exemplify sustainability at Astra Agro. They promote human values, responsible environmental management, and economic growth through collaboration and shared benefit. dedication and hard work, these three communities successfully became the top three in the Astra Agro Innovation (Innovagro) Community Competition 2025.

This recognition highlights the spirit of togetherness, creativity, and care that emerges from strong community engagement.

Astra Agro Strengthens Its Commitment to Sustainable Palm Productivity https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2025/10/11/astra-agro-strengthens-its-commitment-to-sustainable-palm-productivity/ https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2025/10/11/astra-agro-strengthens-its-commitment-to-sustainable-palm-productivity/#respond Sat, 11 Oct 2025 07:28:00 +0000 https://www.astra-agro.co.id/?p=21650 PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk (Astra Agro) reaffirms its commitment to sustainable palm oil production. The company advances this strategy through innovation, inclusivity, and technology.

“At Astra Agro Lestari, we are building an inclusive, technology-based, and environmentally friendly agricultural model. A model that can ensure future food security through a combination of innovation, partnerships, and sustainability,” said President Director of PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk, Djap Tet Fa, while speaking at the Indonesia International Sustainability Forum (IISF) on Friday, October 10th.

At IISF 2025 at the Jakarta Convention Centre, Djap Tet Fa shared insights and best practices from palm oil plantation companies to strengthen food security in line with sustainability principles.

The IISF 2025 Forum, themed “Investing for a Resilient, Sustainable, and Prosperous World,” will feature over 250 speakers and more than 100 global business leaders and philanthropists. The forum highlights Indonesia’s commitment to green economic transition, food security, and renewable energy.

The Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY), who delivered the remarks, emphasised that developing countries like Indonesia need to forge their own path toward sustainable development, without imitating the patterns of developed countries.

There’s no one-size-fits-all formula. We cannot achieve progress by sacrificing the environment or financial stability. “Investment and sustainability must go hand in hand,” said AHY.

Aligning with the Coordinating Minister’s emphasis on realistic, future-oriented strategies, Astra Agro Lestari has developed a sustainable agriculture model based on public-private collaboration.

During the “Sustainable Agriculture” discussion, Djap Tet Fa highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships for long-term food security.

He explained that ‘sustainable intensification,’ producing more from existing land without expansion, is central to Astra Agro Lestari’s strategy.

Key initiatives include rejuvenating old plantations with superior varieties to boost productivity without expanding land use. Astra Agro also promotes research and innovation, such as developing organic biofertilizers to improve soil health, reduce reliance on chemical fertilizers, and lower carbon emissions.

Astra Agro Lestari prioritizes the inclusion of smallholder farmers. “No one left behind,” Djap Tet Fa emphasized. The company provides equal access to planting materials, fertilizers, financing, and training for partner farmers.

Astra Agro Lestari prioritizes digital technology, including drones, artificial intelligence, and data analysis, to monitor plantation health and optimize harvest efficiency. The company also implements the Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) standard and the no deforestation, peatland conservation, and respect for human rights (NDPE) policy, demonstrating its commitment to responsible, transparent, and deforestation-free practices.

Empowering Smallholder Farmers Through Technology

Djap Tet Fa emphasized that smallholder palm oil farmers are Astra Agro’s key partners in advancing food security and industry sustainability.

“Our mission is simple: small farmers must grow with us, not be left behind,” he emphasised.

Through the Smallholder Inclusion Program, Astra Agro Lestari has partnered with thousands of farmers to build a more resilient and modern agricultural ecosystem.

The program offers capacity building for farmers through field training in pest management, precision fertilization, and sustainable land management.

Astra Agro also provides market access and financing by purchasing harvests directly from partner farmers through transparent long-term contracts, as well as supporting access to financial institutions. Digitalisation is no less important in supporting all of the company’s programs. Astra Agro optimises the use of digital platforms for real-time planning of harvest shipments, price monitoring, and agronomic consultations.

President Director Djap Tet Fa emphasized that empowering smallholder farmers is not only a social responsibility but also a strategic investment in the resilience of the national agricultural system.

“When farmers have access to tools, skills, and markets, they become true partners in strengthening national food security and ensuring the sustainability benefits are felt by all parties,” he concluded.

Through these initiatives, Astra Agro Lestari demonstrates that productivity and sustainability are complementary, forming a unified vision for a resilient, inclusive, and environmentally responsible agricultural future.

Concrete actions such as those by Astra Agro Lestari are essential to Indonesia’s journey toward a sustainable future.

Ahmad Fayaz: When Dreams Rise from the Quietest Places https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2025/10/10/ahmad-fayaz-when-dreams-rise-from-the-quietest-places/ https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2025/10/10/ahmad-fayaz-when-dreams-rise-from-the-quietest-places/#respond Fri, 10 Oct 2025 07:11:00 +0000 https://www.astra-agro.co.id/?p=21645 Fayaz grew up in a modest home with a hardworking family. He was known for his genuine smile, bright eyes, and endless curiosity. In his small classroom, he learned, dreamed, and eventually reached the national stage.

Few expected the youngest of six children to win a gold medal at the National English Olympics. Fayaz became a champion, beating hundreds of students from top international schools. He answered every question correctly and finished faster than anyone else.

But this achievement is about more than medals or scores. Fayaz’s story demonstrates that hope can flourish even in the most ordinary settings. He was a child who dared to dream and was given the chance to follow those dreams. Each morning, as sunlight filters through the palm trees, Fayaz gets ready for school. His primary school was built by PT Gunung Sejahtera Ibu Pertiwi (GSIP) and PT Agro Menara Rachmat (AMR), both of which are part of Astra Agro Lestari. That is where his dreams began to take shape, thanks to caring teachers who taught and guided him. Fayaz is always eager to learn and never gives up. “What makes him special is his self-belief,” said his teacher, Putri Azzahra Salsabilla, with pride. She has helped Fayaz by repeating words, reading stories, and patiently practicing English with him. His mother also supported him, giving him encouragement and confidence.

“I never expected anything. My mother always said the important thing is to keep trying and learning,” Fayaz said when asked what motivated him to become the champion. For Fayaz, just having the confidence to join competitions made his family proud. Even at a young age, he did not set high expectations for himself. This is also a result of the foundation built by Astra Agro. Beyond its business activities, the company has made another important investment: supporting the future of the nation’s children. Through sponsored schools, teacher training, and educational facilities, Astra Agro creates a safe space where the dreams of children like Fayaz can grow.

Education is a key component of Astra Agro’s commitment, benefiting both school-age children and the broader community.

Fayaz came home with a gold medal, but he brought back more than just a prize. He brought hope to children, to parents who support them, to teachers who guide them, and to a nation working for a better future.

Small Hands, Big Impact: Astra Agro Drives Green Movement in Kalimantan Through Youth and Community Engagement https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2025/10/03/small-hands-big-impact-astra-agro-drives-green-movement-in-kalimantan-through-youth-and-community-engagement/ https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2025/10/03/small-hands-big-impact-astra-agro-drives-green-movement-in-kalimantan-through-youth-and-community-engagement/#respond Fri, 03 Oct 2025 09:32:00 +0000 https://www.astra-agro.co.id/?p=21254 Amid growing global concern over the environmental crisis, particularly plastic pollution, the subsidiaries of PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk. (Astra Agro) in Kalimantan demonstrate that solutions can emerge from simple places, such as schoolyards, used bottles, and the eager hands of students.

Inspiring initiatives are emerging from various regions in Kalimantan, all sharing a common goal: to cultivate environmental awareness from an early age and to turn waste into a source of life rather than a problem.

Three Astra Agro subsidiaries in East Kalimantan, PT Sumber Kharisma Persada (SKP), PT Cipta Narada Lestari (CNL), and PT Karyanusa Ekadaya (KED) are collaborating with their partnered schools to foster environmental consciousness.

Under the theme “Stop Plastic Pollution,” this commemoration serves as a platform to strengthen the collective commitment of the government, businesses, and the community towards environmental conservation. The event not only showcased various policies but also featured environmental competitions, waste management education, and the signing of a waste commitment declaration at the community level.

A highlight of this achievement was when Kharisma Persada Elementary School, Astra Agro Lestari Elementary School, and Karya Nusa Lestari Middle School received the Adiwiyata School title at the regency level during the 2025 World Environment Day celebration in East Kutai.

Poniso Suryo Renggono, Assistant for Government and Social Welfare, attending on behalf of the Regent of East Kutai, expressed pride in the contributions made by all parties involved, particularly the Astra Agro entities in Kalimantan, which supported the local government in promoting environmental sustainability. “Government support is not only reflected in policy but also realized through concrete joint action. Our collective awareness is the foundation for protecting our environment,” he said enthusiastically.

For Astra Agro, the Adiwiyata title symbolizes the belief that big dreams can stem from small habits. The company aims to educate children not only to be intelligent but also to develop character, compassion, and responsibility toward the environment. “This is an identity we will continue to uphold,” stated the school principal, Furwandi, with great pride.

The achievements of these schools were bolstered by the significant support of PT SKP, PT CNL, and PT KED, all of which align with the implementation of the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry Circular Letter Number 5 of 2025 regarding the reduction of plastic pollution.

However, this success did not happen overnight. It required the hard work of teachers patiently instructing students on waste sorting, the joyful participation of students planting trees in the schoolyard, and the involvement of parents in protecting the environment around their homes.

For children, the concept of protecting the Earth has become an everyday routine: bringing reusable water bottles, collecting plastic for recycling, growing vegetables in recycled pots, and maintaining cleanliness in classrooms and schoolyards.

A similar commitment is also evident at PT Subur Agro Makmur (PT SAM), a subsidiary of AAL in South Kalimantan, which launched the innovative program “Transforming Plastic Waste into Hydroponics.” In collaboration with the State Kindergarten Pembina Daha Selatan, this program not only supports the Healthy School Competition but also teaches students, teachers, and parents about transforming waste into valuable resources.

Through this initiative, used plastic bottles are converted into hydroponic systems that produce fresh vegetables. Children learn that the waste they generate can become a “home” for beneficial plants.

The community has warmly embraced this initiative. “This is not just a project; it’s an investment in the future,” stated Yeni Kusuma Ahmad Yani, Head of the PKK of Daha Selatan District.

PT SAM has also taken an active role in mentoring, assisting with waste sorting, designing hydroponic installations, and engaging with students and parents. This effort transforms the school into not just an educational institution but also a small laboratory for environmental creativity.

The dedication of Astra Agro’s subsidiaries to plastic waste management in Kalimantan illustrates that significant change can begin with small, consistent actions. By engaging schools, communities, and the government, these initiatives not only help reduce waste but also foster an environmentally conscious mindset in the younger generation.

Astra Agro is committed to sustainable waste management, as demonstrated through various programs and activities aimed at reducing the environmental impact of waste, while also involving the community in 5R-based waste management practices (reduce, reuse, recycle, refine, and repair). Additionally, Astra Agro frequently participates in environmental development programs and educates the community about waste management.

Ganoderma: The Silent Killer in Oil Palm Plantations https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2025/09/18/ganoderma-the-silent-killer-in-oil-palm-plantations/ https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2025/09/18/ganoderma-the-silent-killer-in-oil-palm-plantations/#respond Thu, 18 Sep 2025 09:47:06 +0000 https://www.astra-agro.co.id/?p=21177 Behind the green expanse of palm oil plantations, a deadly threat lurks from beneath the ground. It’s not a pest that damages the leaves or extreme weather that hinders pollination, but rather the fungus Ganoderma Boninense. Secretly, the fungus attacked the roots, spread to the trunk, and hollowed out the palm tree from the inside until it collapsed helplessly.

Ganoderma is not an ordinary fungus, as it is the main cause of basal stem rot and the most destructive disease in oil palm plants. The initial symptoms of this disease are usually yellowing leaves, drooping fronds, and slowed plant growth. Then this fungus began to spread thru the stem tissue, eventually causing the plant to slowly die.

Ganoderma is able to kill oil palm trees relatively quickly, causing the total population of trees per hectare (SPH) to drop drastically and resulting in a significant decrease in fresh fruit bunch (FFB) production. Basal stem rot disease caused by Ganoderma is a bitter reality that has posed a risk to oil palm farmers and companies in recent years.

Why is the spread of Ganoderma difficult to control?

Ganoderma is comparable to cancer for oil palms; it metastasized systemically through the soil and roots. Once a plant is infected, a remedy is nearly unattainable. On the other hand, Ganoderma infections are also difficult to detect due to the fungus attacks the base of the trunk, which located underground.

The warm and humid conditions in the plantations accelerate fungal growth, allowing it to thrive across nearly all palm oil production regions in Indonesia. Therefore, if not prevented early on, Ganoderma can affect the productivity of oil palm plantations, whether owned by the people or managed by companies. One fallen tree may trigger a domino effect on other trees, even across the entire plantation area. As a result, the potential losses are significant and may threaten the long-term sustainability of the plantation.

Losses due to Ganoderma are not merely a technical issue in plantations. For palm oil farmers, decreased productivity means reduced daily income, which directly affects their livelihoods. Meanwhile, for plantation companies, production losses can reach millions of tons of fresh fruit bunches per year, impacting the supply chain, labor, and contribution to the local economy.

Thus, Ganoderma is not only a biological threat, but also a social and economic one. If left unchecked, this disease has the potential to weaken the strategic palm oil sector, which has long been a pillar of the country’s foreign exchange earnings and a source of livelihood for millions of people.

Astra Agro Innovation Prevents Ganoderma Spread Through Superior Seedlings

The spread of Ganoderma, which is concerning the industry, has received special attention from PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk (Astra Agro). This is what led Astra Agro’s Research and Development (R&D) team to believe it was necessary to update the previous superior varieties by adding resistance to Ganoderma. Astra Agro conducted in-depth research on the fungus that attacks oil palm plants. After various tests, research, and development, Astra Agro successfully produced three new superior oil palm seedling varieties that are resistant to Ganoderma disease.

The three varieties are named DxP AAL Nirmala MRG, DxP AAL Lestari MRG, and DxP AAL Sejahtera MRG. Astra Agro released these three new varieties after they were declared approved by the Plantation Crops Variety Release Meeting held by the Directorate General of Plantations in Bogor on Thursday, May 16, 2025. The main advantage of this latest variety is that it is moderately resistant to or tolerant of basal stem rot caused by the fungus Ganoderma.

Another equally important advantage is preventing parthenocarpy, commonly referred to as shriveled fruit. Interestingly, these three latest varieties will not produce shriveled fruit, which will have a positive impact on the resulting productivity. Similarly, the sex ratio, or the proportion of female flowers to the total number of flowers, is also important. The sex ratio in this latest variety is quite balanced, ranging from approximately 75% to 88%, which can support natural pollination in the field without manual assistance.

Despite having new advantages, these three varieties still possess the advantages of previous varieties, such as fresh fruit bunch (FFB) production and higher oil content. For your information, Astra Agro has a total of 6 types of seedlings. Previously, in 2020, Astra Agro successfully created three flagship varieties to support the competitiveness and productivity of oil palm plantations, named AAL Lestari, AAL Sejahtera, and AAL Nirmala.

The Director of Plantation Seed Development at the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture, Ebi Rulianti, stated during the Astra Agro seed release hearing that it is certain there is no land or soil in Indonesia free from Ganoderma. The oil palm varieties DxP AAL Nirmala MRG, DxP AAL Lestari MRG, and DxP AAL Sejahtera MRG are suitable for release or approval because they are considered a solution for managing basal stem rot caused by Ganoderma boninense.

According to her, Ganoderma disease may not be completely eradicated, but its impact can be minimized. With the release of new varieties by Astra Agro, it is hoped that the company and farmers will be able to achieve optimal production despite the silent and hidden threat of Ganoderma.

For Astra Agro, protecting palm oil plantations from the threat of ganoderma is one of the steps to support sustainability. The company wants to ensure that future generations not only inherit palm oil plantations that are resistant to disease, but also a well-preserved environment and economic benefits for the community. In line with its commitment to prosper with the nation, the company continues to protect nature and nurture hope.

Astra Agro’s Role in Advancing Pasangkayu’s Social and Economic Development https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2025/09/03/astra-agros-role-in-advancing-pasangkayus-social-and-economic-development/ https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2025/09/03/astra-agros-role-in-advancing-pasangkayus-social-and-economic-development/#respond Wed, 03 Sep 2025 03:10:00 +0000 https://www.astra-agro.co.id/?p=21054 Pasangkayu is the northernmost district in West Sulawesi province, directly bordering the Makassar Strait. This coastal area is known for its stunning beaches.

Pasangkayu Regency was established in 2003 when it split from Mamuju Regency. Before its formation, this region was known as North Mamuju Regency. At that time, Mamuju was a remote area with limited transportation and infrastructure, largely due to its distance from urban centers.

For a region to thrive, it needs a population of approximately 100,000 people. Additionally, local revenue in fiscal terms is expected to be at least Rp10 billion, as stipulated in Government Regulation No. 78/2007 and Law No. 23/2014.

The division into Pasangkayu occurred because the area of 3,043.75 km² had developed rapidly after each region gained autonomy. This development was made possible by the regional government’s right, authority, and obligation to regulate and manage its own governmental affairs and the interests of the local community.

After 2003, the regional government began to open opportunities for private sector investments, inviting palm oil plantation entrepreneurs to participate in the development of the coastal area.

By 2024, nearly 20 years later, the population of Pasangkayu had reached 184,905 people. Many residents rely on agriculture, fisheries, and plantation sectors for their livelihoods. Furthermore, the regional Local Revenue (PAD) increased from Rp5 billion in 2005, when it was newly established, to Rp18.47 billion.

PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk (Astra Agro) operates in Pasangkayu and plays a significant role in the region’s development. The palm oil company is committed to contributing to the prosperity of the nation, particularly for communities surrounding its operational areas. Adhering to four fundamental pillars of social responsibility, Astra Agro aims to make sustainable and meaningful contributions to society and the environment across all its subsidiaries in Indonesia, including one in Pasangkayu Regency.

The four pillars are: Astra Kreatif (Economy), Astra Sehat (Health), Astra Cerdas (Education), and Astra Hijau (Environment). These pillars guide Astra Agro’s efforts to benefit society and the environment.

Each program within Astra Agro’s subsidiary companies is tailored based on prioritization through proposals and discussions with the community, and it is aligned with local government initiatives and the region’s vision and mission.

Under the economic pillar, Astra Agro promotes community empowerment through programs like Astra Kreatif, which supports micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and boosts local income.

This is demonstrated by assistance provided to palm oil farmer groups, benefiting a total of 1,742 individuals across all Astra Agro subsidiaries in Pasangkayu Regency. Moreover, training programs for non-palm oil businesses have targeted approximately 800 households.

Astra Agro has fostered various potential SMEs in Pasangkayu Regency, aiming to empower the local economy. These enterprises include fish farming groups, Joper and layer chicken farming groups, goat farming groups, and mushroom cultivation MSMEs derived from palm oil processing, as well as MSMEs producing various snack chips grown locally or produced under community supervision.

Additionally, Astra Agro supports non-palm oil farmers, including those cultivating chili, corn, and various fruits and vegetables, alongside emerging MSMEs, such as coffee shop business groups.

In terms of public health, Astra Agro is actively involved through the Astra Sehat program. As of 2024, the company has provided supplementary feeding assistance (PMT) to 3,267 infants and toddlers, in addition to 412 pregnant women.

Astra Agro also supports healthcare facilities by training 295 posyandu (community health post) cadres spread across surrounding villages.

Various routine health programs are frequently promoted, including free vaccinations, family planning initiatives, blood donation drives, and mass circumcision events.

In the education sector, through Astra Cerdas, Astra Agro supports all forms of education, offering scholarships, improving teacher quality, and constructing educational facilities and infrastructure.

Currently, Astra Agro supports 50 fostered schools in West Sulawesi, including Adiwiyata schools, provides assistance to 100 honorary teachers, and offers scholarships to 174 outstanding students.

Alongside its focus on community welfare, the environment is also a key concern for Astra Agro, which addresses social responsibility through the Environmental pillar, Astra Hijau. The company actively engages in waste management, tree planting, and clean water management initiatives.

Astra Agro’s Contributions to Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2025/09/01/astra-agros-contributions-to-reducing-greenhouse-gas-emissions/ https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2025/09/01/astra-agros-contributions-to-reducing-greenhouse-gas-emissions/#respond Mon, 01 Sep 2025 02:09:00 +0000 https://www.astra-agro.co.id/?p=21049 Amidst the vast green expanse of the oil palm plantation, life thrives, not only for the plants but also for millions of people who place their hopes there. The synergy between nature and the living beings within it has fostered a sustainable and interconnected ecosystem.

Oil palm, like any other plant, absorbs carbon dioxide and releases the oxygen essential for life. According to the book “Myths vs. Facts of Palm Oil,” published by the Palm Oil Agribusiness Strategic Policy Institute (PASPI), each hectare of oil palm plantation can absorb 64 tons of carbon dioxide annually and produce approximately 18 tons of oxygen.

Despite these benefits, oil palm is often portrayed negatively, particularly regarding its contribution to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that exacerbate global warming.

It is crucial to recognize that global warming can also affect oil palm plantations. For example, the El Niño phenomenon led to extreme hot weather, disrupting national production in 2023 and potentially impacting crop productivity in the long term. Climate change has become a significant challenge for the global community, affecting various sectors, including the palm oil industry.

Greenhouse gases alter the climate by functioning like a greenhouse, absorbing energy and slowing down the release of energy back into space. Gases such as carbon dioxide (CO₂) and methane (CH₄) have different capabilities to absorb solar heat and varying lifespans in the atmosphere—some dissipate quickly, while others linger for decades or even centuries.

The Earth naturally maintains a balanced system where the energy received from the sun equals the energy reflected back into space. This balance stabilizes the Earth’s temperature and sustains life. However, due to human and industrial activities, the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere has increased. Consequently, more heat is trapped, causing a rise in Earth’s temperature, commonly referred to as climate change or global warming.

In the palm oil industry, as noted in the Journal of Natural Resources and Environmental Management, there is a pressing need to boost the productivity of fresh fruit bunches (FFB) to meet market demand for vegetable oil.

This often involves land expansion and fertilizer intensification. However, these activities significantly increase greenhouse gas emissions, further impacting climate change.

PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk (Astra Agro), a key player in the palm oil industry, has also felt the effects of climate change and extreme weather. The company experienced a decline in FFB production due to a prolonged drought in 2019 and the summer heat that extended into 2024.

Recognizing the importance of sustainable practices, Astra Agro established a Sustainability Policy in 2015. This initiative has motivated all employees to commit to protecting the environmental ecosystem, emphasizing transparency in managing carbon emissions and reducing greenhouse gases to help combat climate change.

Currently, Astra Agro measures its greenhouse gas emissions, categorized as Scope 1 and 2 emissions, from 46 subsidiaries, which include core plantations, palm oil processing mills, refineries, NPK blending plants, and the headquarters.

Astra Agro has achieved significant environmental performance milestones, surpassing various targets set in its Sustainability Aspiration 2030. The company’s use of renewable energy reached 92.17%, leading to a reduction of 126.3 ktCO2eq in greenhouse gas emissions.

In 2024, Astra Agro successfully reduced its emission intensity compared to 2023. This initiative will positively impact the company’s roadmap for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and ensuring sustainable operations in the future.

These achievements stem from various greenhouse gas emission reduction programs implemented across all subsidiaries, supporting the 2030 Nationally Determined Contribution and the 2060 Net Zero Emission (NZE) goals.

Astra Agro has also developed a Nature-based Solution (NbS) program, which not only aims to reduce carbon emissions but also to enhance and improve ecosystem quality.

As of 2024, Astra Agro has planted forest trees across an area of 201 hectares, totaling approximately 173,240 trees. Additionally, the company has implemented a solar Water Management System (WMS), conserving 200,000 liters of water by replacing existing pump capabilities.

Astra Agro is making significant strides in waste management. The ratio of treated B3 solid waste to generated B3 solid waste has increased from 0.48% in 2023 to 0.68% in 2024. Additionally, the company has achieved a 100% ratio for B3 liquid waste to generated waste in both 2023 and 2024.

To further enhance their sustainability efforts, Astra Agro has implemented several initiatives. These include the use of liquid waste, known as Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME), which is rich in organic matter, to generate new renewable energy. The company is also building methane capture facilities and has reduced coal usage by substituting it with palm kernel shells.

Research from the Journal of Natural Resources and Environmental Management highlights that fertilization significantly contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, as fertilizers contain elements like CO2 and N2O that can lead to such emissions. Nevertheless, the application of fertilizers is crucial for achieving optimal productivity.

In response, Astra Agro has begun reducing the use of chemical fertilizers, such as NPK, by adopting manufactured fertilizer products that utilize ASTEMIC (Astra Efficient Microbe) biological fertilizer. This innovative product is based on specific microbes and is applied across a 50,000-hectare mineral area.

All of Astra Agro’s initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions align with the company’s sustainability strategy, known as Astra Agro Sustainability Aspirations 2030. This strategy focuses on minimizing the impact of greenhouse gases, promoting diversity and inclusion in the environment, and ensuring that the company’s operations positively affect both local communities and the nation, in line with its mission to prosper alongside the nations.

Astra Agro’s commitment and achievements in sustainability have been recognized through various awards. Notably, the company received The Best Corporate Emission Reduction Transparency Award in 2025, along with the Green Achievement Award in Emission Reduction and the Diamond Achievement in Emission Transparency.

Empowering the Kaili Tado Community with Access for Clean Water https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2025/08/06/empowering-the-kaili-tado-community-with-access-for-clean-water/ https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2025/08/06/empowering-the-kaili-tado-community-with-access-for-clean-water/#respond Wed, 06 Aug 2025 09:03:00 +0000 https://www.astra-agro.co.id/?p=20843 Every day, Liliana, the 38 years old housewive, walks for about 45 minutes through dense thickets and up and down steep roads to fetch clean water from a spring on the Lariang River in Towiora Village, Donggala Regency, West Sulawesi. Countless times a day, she and other members of the Kaili Tado tribe make multiple trips carrying jerry cans and buckets to collect the clean water they need for various purposes.

Liliana not only gathers clean water for drinking but also relies on the Lariang River for bathing, washing, and sanitation because the Kaili Tado community in Towiora Village has no access to clean water sources, wells, or bathrooms. All water-related activities occur at the river, with no separation between water used for consumption and that used for sanitation.

According to Liliana, the persistent challenge of walking to the river multiple times for water has become an unavoidable part of life for her and the other residents of Towiora Hamlet. “What’s even more difficult is that when we need to use the restroom, we also have to hurry to the river—especially at night when there’s no lighting at all. Just going back and forth between our homes and the river takes over an hour,” she remarked.

These challenging conditions often leave residents exhausted, prompting many complaints. During the rainy season, residents sometimes prefer to collect rainwater for their household needs, even though its quality can be questionable. “When we’re desperate and can’t take it anymore, we’ll use rainwater rather than have nothing at all,” Liliana stated.

The Lariang River also poses dangers due to its strong currents during floods, which can threaten the safety of community members performing their daily tasks. Even in dry seasons or during storms, those in need of water continue to depend on the river, regardless of its condition. Who can guarantee their safety in such circumstances?

Similarly, another housewife, Romlia, shared her experience. Every morning before sunrise, she wakes up early to go to the river to bathe herself and her child. “Once it gets light, the river gets crowded with people bathing, washing, and doing chores, so I go first to avoid the queue and to ensure my child doesn’t feel too embarrassed, even though it’s still dark,” Romlia explained.

Romlia continued, saying that while it was still pitch dark, she carried two five-liter jerry cans of water home after bathing her child. As a middle-aged woman, she admitted that she often suffers from back pain due to the heavy loads and the long distances she walks to the river multiple times each day. “But what else can we do? We have to meet our needs, and thankfully, we’ve found a nearby clean water source,” she said.

Access to clean water and adequate sanitation are basic human needs. One of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is to ensure that communities have universal access to these essentials.

Recognizing the community’s struggles with water access, PT Lestari Tani Teladan (LTT) has increased its support for Towiora Village. The company has successfully built five clean water facilities in the form of public wells and sanitation facilities (MCK).

“Alhamdulillah, we have been greatly assisted. We no longer have to go to the river as often, as we now have wells and bathrooms with clean water,” said Romlia.

Liliana noted that even residents from outside Towiora Village come to collect clean water from PT LTT’s facilities, especially during the dry season or when the Lariang River’s water quality deteriorates.

“These water and sanitation facilities have benefited over 100 families in Towiora Village in need of clean water access,” said Sukri DM Lage, the village head.

For him, the establishment of these facilities is significant for a village still facing water shortages and insufficient sanitation options for some residents.

Warni, Chair of the Towiora Village Council, observed the initial phases of PT LTT’s construction of these wells and sanitation facilities. He hopes the residents can access clean water without difficulty and conduct their daily activities in a more comfortable and hygienic manner.

“We are gradually improving Towiora Village with the help of the company. Once we have clean water, we hope the residents will become healthier and more productive in the future,” Warni said.

This initiative by PT LTT stems from ongoing, constructive, and participatory discussions between community members and the company. These needs were communicated and explored through the active involvement of PT LTT’s team, aligning with what the community hopes for and requires.

Where Palm Oil Trees Thrive in PT ANA, Communities Blossom https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2025/08/06/where-palm-oil-trees-thrive-in-pt-ana-communities-blossom/ https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2025/08/06/where-palm-oil-trees-thrive-in-pt-ana-communities-blossom/#respond Wed, 06 Aug 2025 08:52:18 +0000 https://www.astra-agro.co.id/?p=20838 Amidst the green hills and blue sea stretching to the horizon, North Morowali holds simple yet meaningful stories. PT Agro Nusa Abadi (ANA) has made a significant impact over the years, not merely as a business but as an essential part of the community’s life. Through social responsibility programs, the company addresses the genuine needs of residents and promotes community well-being.

There are hopes that continue to grow: the hopes of educators who share their knowledge without seeking recognition, the aspirations of healthcare workers like posyandu cadres who diligently ensure the healthy development of pregnant women, infants, and toddlers, and the ambitions of small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) entrepreneurs striving to succeed in their startup ventures. Behind all this, PT ANA stands as a partner dedicated to contributing to the community.

PT ANA implements its sustainability programs in the Morowali Utara District of Central Sulawesi Province, focusing on the villages of Towara Pantai, Peboa, Towara, Molino, Bungintimbe, Tompira, and Bunta in the Petasia Timur Sub-district. These programs are regularly implemented based on the Four Pillars of CSR, in collaboration with village governments, community leaders, and local stakeholders. Through participatory meetings, the community and the company jointly design initiatives that align with local needs.

Recently, PT ANA’s economic pillar has targeted local traditional markets, where the heartbeat of the local economy can be felt. By collaborating with the village government and residents, PT ANA has helped revitalize Bungintimbe Market. The company’s support with heavy equipment has expanded the market area, creating space for more traders, more buyers, and, ultimately, more opportunities.

Musniati, the Village Head of Bungintimbe, greatly appreciates PT ANA’s contributions. She believes that the renovation of this market has become a crucial tool for economic circulation among her villagers. Musniati hopes this initiative will enhance community income and support future village development.

“With more facilities and a larger area, this market will be ready to become a new economic hub for the residents of Bungintimbe,” Musniati explained.

Simultaneously, PT ANA also supports UMKM Sinergi Magasi, a business group formed by the Family Empowerment and Welfare Group (PKK) in Molino Village. This business focuses on producing processed foods and horticultural agriculture, particularly chili cultivation. To aid this business’s development, PT ANA has provided production tools and essential infrastructure, understanding that even small businesses deserve significant attention.

“We can only express our gratitude to PT ANA for consistently supporting not just the village but also its residents directly,” stated the Chairperson of the PKK in Molino Village.

For PT ANA, empowerment is not just about providing assistance but about nurturing the potential that exists within the village community—the potential for progress and independence. The company positively evaluates the pioneers of these businesses through established SMEs, as they can have a positive impact and serve as role models for residents and other villages.

PT ANA continues to implement other CSR pillars with a commitment to shared prosperity with the nation. In education, PT ANA supports the sector by providing incentives to 21 honorary teachers at 13 schools under its guidance until March 2025. The beneficiaries include 13 primary school teachers, 7 junior high school teachers, and 1 senior high school teacher. These incentives serve not merely as financial support but as recognition of their dedication to educating the village’s children.

In the health sector, PT ANA demonstrates its commitment by providing incentives to 60 Posyandu cadres from 12 supported villages. These dedicated mothers monitor the growth and development of infants, track the health of pregnant women, and care for the elderly. Additionally, PT ANA regularly distributes Supplementary Food (PMT) as tangible support for community nutrition.

Importantly, as a company operating amidst Central Sulawesi’s abundance in natural resources, PT ANA acknowledges that sustainability can be achieved by maintaining environmental balance. Between 2024 and 2025, PT ANA will strengthen its commitment through various environmental initiatives that focus on conservation, impact reduction, and environmental education for the surrounding community.

These initiatives include planting trees in buffer zones around villages to reduce the risk of erosion and improve air quality. Thousands of local tree seedlings have been planted in collaboration with communities and schools in the area.

Furhtermore, PT ANA also conducts training and awareness programs on the importance of environmental protection for villagers, farmer groups, and students, covering topics such as household waste management.

Empowering Sustainable Business for the Future Generation of Indonesia and Championing Food Security with Astra Agro https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2025/07/11/empowering-sustainable-business-for-the-future-generation-of-indonesia-and-championing-food-security-with-astra-agro/ https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2025/07/11/empowering-sustainable-business-for-the-future-generation-of-indonesia-and-championing-food-security-with-astra-agro/#respond Fri, 11 Jul 2025 10:42:00 +0000 https://www.astra-agro.co.id/?p=20723 Astra Agro: Empowering Sustainable Business for the Future Generation of Indonesia and Championing Food Security

As we approach the year 2045, a significant moment awaits Indonesia: a century of independence! The Golden Generation of 2045 will commemorate this historic milestone, and achieving food self-sufficiency is a vital foundation for this vision. The government’s reaffirmed commitment to harnessing our natural resources, free from import reliance, fuels our collective dream.

In harmony with this grand vision, PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk (Astra Agro) is taking decisive action. As a proud contributor to our nation, Astra Agro actively supports the 2025 food self-sufficiency program through various initiatives focused on staple crops like corn and rice.

While Astra Agro is often recognized as a palm oil company, it is making impactful strides by planting corn across its subsidiaries in Sumatra, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi. This effort transcends business; it embodies Astra Agro’s dedication to “Prosper with the Nations,” or “Sejahtera Bersama Bangsa.” Their commitment to genuinely improving community welfare is unwavering.

Astra Agro embraces its extended family of employees and their loved ones, known as paguyuban. With 499 paguyuban spanning 8 provinces, they unite over 30,000 heads of families into a vibrant, independent community. Even prior to the corn initiative, these skilled community groups thrived in cultivating diverse plants.

For Astra Agro, community empowerment and food security pulse at the heart of every business endeavor, aligning perfectly with the government’s ambition of making Indonesia a global food barn by 2045.

The corn planting initiative marks a collaborative first step with local governments to enhance the production of essential food commodities. Corn is a powerhouse for food security and economic vitality, serving as a staple food and a primary ingredient in numerous processed foods, including animal feed. It ranks as the third highest value-added agricultural commodity, following rice and palm oil.

Following a successful simultaneous planting across 31 Astra Agro entities nationwide, the first corn harvest arrived almost simultaneously, from Aceh to Central Sulawesi.

Astra Agro’s commitment to food security extends beyond corn. They are also providing gogo rice seeds to farmer groups in Cianjur Regency, blending food needs with the preservation of ancestral cultural heritage. Gogo rice, a resilient crop, is vital for food self-sufficiency, especially for the Baduy community. Its ancient cultivation offers a more straightforward planting process without complex irrigation, thriving even in dry periods.

With the potential to yield up to 7 tons of dry grains per hectare and a quicker harvest, gogo rice can also be intercropped with other plants and is recognized as premium rice, beneficial for diabetics.

In Cianjur, gogo rice planting occurs in seven locations, including Kanoman Village, Cigea Village, and Cibokor Village, through a collaboration with the Directorate General of Estates of the Ministry of Agriculture. This partnership among Astra Agro, the government, and the Farmers’ Group Association (Gapoktan) represents a dedicated stride toward achieving food self-sufficiency.

Stay tuned as Astra Agro prepares for the first celebratory harvest of gogo rice alongside the community, ready to sow a legacy of sustainability and hope!

Growing Hope Through Mushrooms Harvest: The Transformation of Independent Youth Mentored by PT LTT https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2025/07/11/growing-hope-through-mushrooms-harvest-the-transformation-of-independent-youth-mentored-by-pt-ltt/ https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2025/07/11/growing-hope-through-mushrooms-harvest-the-transformation-of-independent-youth-mentored-by-pt-ltt/#respond Fri, 11 Jul 2025 10:11:17 +0000 https://www.astra-agro.co.id/?p=20641 In a small village in the interior of Central Sulawesi, surrounded by vast stretches of palm oil plantations, a girl named Novita Sari often harvests oyster mushrooms from hundreds of baglogs. A baglog refers to the plastic containers, made from heat-resistant polypropylene, in which the mushrooms grow. The cylindrical bags are neatly arranged in a dark room, with some already blooming with mushrooms ready for harvest, while others are still in bud.

Novita serves as the secretary of the youth community in her village, Towiora Village, located in the Rio Pakava District of Donggala Regency, Central Sulawesi. Together with several members of the youth community, she is venturing into oyster mushroom cultivation under the shade of palm trees.

“Initially, the youth group was formed first, and the idea of cultivation became one of our activities,” Novita explained.

She noted that building this community was not as easy as it might seem, as many young people in Towiora Village do not continue their education, leaving them with limited activities. “At first, we struggled with the idea of mushroom cultivation, and even daily activities sometimes left our members feeling confused,” she said.

This is what motivated Novita and some members of her group to create a youth community called Karang Taruna (youth organization) Harapan Bangsa. For Novita, a recent graduate of a prestigious university in Palu, this experience opened her eyes to the idea that change doesn’t require stability; it stems from sincere intentions.

Returning to her hometown and working to improve her village became her aspiration in forming this youth organization. “If it’s not us, who will make our village better?” Novita remarked enthusiastically.

Despite facing challenges, a strong enthusiasm emerged, igniting a desire to change the fate of the youth in her village. The youth community led by Novita successfully attracted around 60 young members in Towiora Village, a previously quiet area that lacked youth activities. Now, it has become more cheerful and vibrant.

The youth organization in Towiora Village engages in various activities, including celebrating Independence Day on August 17th, religious holiday festivities, regular village activities like posyandu (integrated health service posts), and community service. These initiatives have now become consistent activities successfully managed by the youth organization.

The community has received an incredibly positive response from the village government, the local society, and the palm oil industry that coexists with Towiora Village. The only nearby industry is Lestari Tani Teladan (LTT), a palm oil company that has enthusiastically embraced the youth initiative founded by Novita and her team. Their main goal is to empower and uplift the community.

“I’m impressed that with PT LTT’s support! This mushroom cultivation has been a tremendous help. They built the mushroom house, purchased hundreds of baglogs, and assisted us in marketing our sales,” said Novita.

PT LTT not only focuses on its youth community, but also consistently contributes to the development of Towiora Village, its foster village. The company goes beyond simply fulfilling its obligations by supporting the community in various areas. For example, it provides not just one-time assistance, but also regular training and mentoring, ensuring that its initiatives are sustainable and that the community can achieve independence in entrepreneurship.

For Novi, who is relatively young and just starting her career, the income from oyster mushroom cultivation may be uncertain; however, this endeavor presents numerous opportunities for change, particularly for the youth organization. Members who were previously inactive are now engaged in mushroom cultivation, participating in productive activities and generating economic value.

During the peak harvest season, the daily yield of oyster mushrooms can be substantial, with harvests occurring multiple times a day, often producing dozens of kilograms of mushrooms ready for sale. Interestingly, even outside of peak season, the mushrooms remain fruitful, allowing for harvesting at least two to three times daily, which ensures continuous activities in harvesting and marketing the produce.

Sukri D.M. Lage, the Head of Towiora Village, expressed pride in the initiatives developed by the youth organization, both in nurturing the youth community and in the mushroom cultivation business supported by PT LTT.

“We in Towiora Village are continually grateful for the contributions of PT LTT, a palm oil company that has significantly supported us in all aspects of community needs,” said Sukri D.M. Lage.

PT LTT, which operates under PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk (Astra Agro), aims to promote the development of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in areas surrounding palm oil plantations through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program. Astra Agro actively involves the youth by providing training, mentoring, and access to markets to help them grow and contribute to the local economy. The ultimate goal is to foster economic independence within the community and create prosperous villages.

The establishment of Karang Taruna Harapan Bangsa aligns with Astra Agro’s mission of mutual prosperity and the principle of sustainability through its Sustainability Aspirations. Astra Agro has set targets to be achieved by 2030, collaborating on people, portfolio, and public contributions, while upholding Good Corporate Governance (GCG) as a key enabler.

“More importantly, the village of Towiora now has a renewed spirit. As a representative of Karang Taruna Harapan Bangsa, I want to convey to the community here that we should view palm oil not simply as a business crop, but as a potential future that can be processed wisely and sustainably,” concluded Novita Sari.

Palm oil plantations are not just fields of oil; they represent expanses of hope and hard work. Behind their lush greenery lies a balance between fortune and sustainability, between industry and conscience.
