Preserving East Kalimantan’s Natural Legacy: Astra Agro Subsidiary Wins Award for Tolu Liang Conservation https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2026/02/19/preserving-east-kalimantans-natural-legacy-astra-agro-subsidiary-wins-award-for-tolu-liang-conservation/ https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2026/02/19/preserving-east-kalimantans-natural-legacy-astra-agro-subsidiary-wins-award-for-tolu-liang-conservation/#respond Thu, 19 Feb 2026 06:56:00 +0000 https://www.astra-agro.co.id/?p=22163 PT Sukses Tani Nusasubur (STN), a subsidiary of PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk. (Astra Agro), received an award from the Governor of East Kalimantan for effective management of High Conservation Value (HCV) areas within its plantations.

The award was presented at the 2025 East Kalimantan Plantation Coordination Meeting, organised by the East Kalimantan Provincial Plantation Agency.

STN preserves the Goa Tolu Liang area in Babulu District, North Penajam Paser Regency, maintaining its natural ecosystem.

The protected area with karst rock formations that have formed naturally over thousands of years is still well preserved, including its water sources.

As a result, the area serves as a crucial habitat for local biodiversity.

Ujang Rachmad, Assistant II for Economy and Development of East Kalimantan Province, expressed his appreciation and gratitude to the award recipients.

He emphasised that this achievement was the result of cross-sector collaboration.

“The East Kalimantan Provincial Government highly appreciates the contributions of all parties who have actively promoted the advancement of the plantation sector.

Collaboration like this is the key to inclusive and sustainable regional economic development,” he said.

Similarly, A. Muzakkir, Acting Head of the East Kalimantan Plantation Service, expressed appreciation to all award recipients for their strong commitment to supporting regional plantation development programs. He noted that successful plantation development requires collaboration among multiple parties.

“We would like to express our gratitude and appreciation to all partners, business actors, officials, and farmer groups who have been actively contributing.

“This award is expected to inspire continued innovation and strengthen each party’s role in advancing sustainable and equitable plantations in East Kalimantan,” said Muzakkir.

Triputra, representing PT STN Management, stated that the company consistently applies a science-based approach by using High Conservation Value (HCV) assessment criteria to protect conservation areas.

The company is committed to adopting internationally recognized best practices for identifying, protecting, and managing HCV areas, referencing the Indonesian toolkit and guidelines from the High Conservation Value Network (HCVN).

“We will strive to build synergy between the environment and local communities around our operational areas, for one Indonesia,” he explained.

He explained that the HCV assessment was conducted to support sustainable palm oil plantation management, while prioritizing biodiversity conservation and the area’s ecological functions.

PT STN’s conservation of Tolu Liang Cave maintains natural ecological conditions, with ironwood and meranti trees among the forest vegetation and undisturbed rattan growth.

Eagles and hornbills can still be seen flying across the forest, while gibbons call out each morning from their arboreal habitats.

The presence of these animals indicates that the area’s ecological functions remain intact. Consistent management is essential for maintaining long-term ecological balance.

Eagles and hornbills continue to fly between forest patches, while gibbons sing each morning in their arboreal habitat.

The presence of these animals indicates that the area’s ecological functions are well maintained. Ongoing management is vital for sustaining ecological balance over time.

Karst Landscape Area is in accordance with the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources’ Regulation No. 17 of 2012 concerning the Determination of Karst Landscapes.

This policy aims to regulate the protection of Karst Landscape Areas that function as natural water regulators, preserve Karst Landscape Areas that have unique and scientific value as objects of research and investigation for the development of science, and control the utilisation of Karst Landscape Areas.

Astra Agro has implemented a sustainability policy, including zero deforestation across all operations since 2015.

This sustainability policy is integral to the company and applies to the entire supply chain, including core plantations, plasma plantations, and third-party suppliers.

Astra Agro’s zero deforestation policy has four main points, namely:

First, no development in High Carbon Stock (HCS) forests.
Second, no development in areas with High Conservation Value (HCV).
Third, no burning.
Fourth, reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in plantations.

For information, High Conservation Value (HCV) areas are landscapes that have unique or significant importance in biological, ecological, hydrological, and socio-cultural contexts.

Dr Vera then presented on dental health, explaining the importance of dental hygiene and demonstrating proper brushing techniques. Astra Agro Subsidiary Supports Coastal Protection through Mangrove Rehabilitation https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2026/01/20/astra-agro-subsidiary-supports-coastal-protection-through-mangrove-rehabilitation/ https://www.astra-agro.co.id/2026/01/20/astra-agro-subsidiary-supports-coastal-protection-through-mangrove-rehabilitation/#respond Tue, 20 Jan 2026 03:12:00 +0000 https://www.astra-agro.co.id/?p=21996 On a recent morning, a fisherman’s small boat navigated the dense mangrove corridors along the coast of Aceh Singkil, Aceh Province. The robust mangrove roots stabilized the mud and waves, while providing essential habitats for crabs, fish, and shellfish, which have become increasingly abundant. For local residents, this transformation represents not only a revitalized landscape but also the gradual restoration of their primary source of livelihood. “Before the mangroves grew like this, we often returned home with little catch.

“Now, almost every day we can get fish and mangrove crabs to sell or consume ourselves,” stated Afrizal, a local fisherman. He noted that the rehabilitated mangrove area has stabilized fish catches and enhanced coastal security, as the shoreline is now less susceptible to erosion. This ecological recovery is a result of a mangrove rehabilitation program initiated by PT Perkebunan Lembah Bhakti (PLB), a subsidiary of PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk, since 2018.

By 2025, the company aims to have planted 51,000 mangrove trees across approximately 14.73 hectares, including a recent addition of 5,000 trees on 2 hectares. These initiatives contribute to coastal restoration and foster new opportunities for community engagement with the natural environment. Additionally, a group of high school students actively participated in planting mangrove seedlings, gaining practical experience in environmental conservation.

“Usually, we only learn from books. Here, we see firsthand how mangroves can protect the coast and serve as a home for many animals,” remarked a student from SMA Negeri 1 Gunung Meriah, who participated in the mangrove planting organized by PT PLB. The student expressed hope that such activities would increase environmental awareness among the younger generation. Surkani, Head of the Environment Agency (DLH) of Aceh Singkil Regency, also commended this collaborative initiative.

The mangrove rehabilitation program implemented by PT PLB in collaboration with the community and students exemplifies effective synergy in coastal environmental protection. Surkani noted that the program’s impact extends beyond ecological benefits to include social and economic improvements. He emphasized that mangroves are vital for climate change mitigation, as they absorb carbon and protect coastlines from erosion. “Not many can consistently preserve the environment, but PT PLB has been able to carry out this commitment since 2018.

He further highlighted the significant initiative of involving the education sector directly in the program. Monitoring in the rehabilitation area indicates healthy mangrove growth and increased biodiversity, including various species of birds, mammals, and reptiles. These findings suggest that the rehabilitation efforts are effective and offer long-term benefits to the coastal ecosystem.

“Ecosystem balance is Astra Agro’s primary commitment in maintaining sustainable business operations,” stated PT PLB Administrator M. Asrar Iqbal. He explained that the mangrove rehabilitation initiative is one of several programs supporting this commitment. For coastal communities, mangroves represent both environmental preservation and future security. “If the mangroves are preserved, our children will still be able to fish in the same place and live off a healthy sea,” Afrizal added. This optimism grows alongside the mangrove roots now firmly established in Aceh Singkil’s coastal soil. Through its ongoing mangrove rehabilitation program, PT PLB reaffirms its dedication to generating positive outcomes for both the environment and the community. The thriving mangroves today symbolize hope for future generations.

As the province marks its 69th anniversary, the business sector is increasingly recognized as a strategic partner to the government in enhancing the community’s quality of life in a sustainable manner.

“Reducing stunting cannot rely solely on the health sector. The education, social, economic, women’s empowerment, agriculture, and infrastructure sectors all play vital roles. Therefore, strategic and adaptive interventions must be implemented in an integrated manner, and foster parents are greatly needed in every region,” said Jambi Governor Al Haris at the official opening of the Performance Assessment of the Convergence Action for Accelerating Stunting Reduction in Jambi Province’s Regencies and Cities in July 2025.

In line with this approach, PT Sari Aditya Loka (SAL), a palm oil plantation company based in Merangin and Sarolangun Regencies, has demonstrated a strong commitment to supporting the government’s development agenda.

“Throughout 2025, the company consistently implements community-based health programs that directly contribute to stunting prevention and reduction,” stated Slamet Riyadi, Assistant Sustainability Manager at PT SAL.

The Jambi local government recognized this commitment. In October 2025, PT SAL received appreciation from the Merangin District Government for its active role in reducing stunting. This recognition was further reinforced by the awarding of the Stunting Prevention Foster Parent Charter (GENTING) from the Jambi Province BKKBN in December 2025.

Through the Astra Sehat program, PT SAL mentors 35 posyandu in its primary operational area, as well as six posyandu dedicated to the Suku Anak Dalam (SAD) community. The program provides elementary feeding, trains posyandu (integrated health post) cadres, supports health facilities and infrastructure, delivers medical services, and facilitates patient referrals. In collaboration with the local health center, the company also operates a mobile health center service that reaches 241 households and provides a dedicated ambulance for the SAD community,” he added.

In addition to health initiatives, PT SAL supports education for the surrounding community and the Suku Anak Dalam tribe. By 2025, the company will mentor 13 schools in Merangin and Sarolangun districts, supporting 412 students and 16 educators.

“To support the education for SAD children, PT SAL provides Wisma Madu Rimbo as a residential facility for students from elementary to high school,” explained Slamet Riyadi.

The company also manages two kindergartens and four daycare centers for the children of its employees, serving a total of 70 students. The company’s contributions also extend to environmental and food security initiatives. In 2025, PT SAL distributed 600 jengkol tree seedlings, which the SAD community planted in the buffer zone of Bukit Duabelas National Park. This program is expected to provide long-term economic benefits and support forest sustainability.

Community economic development (Suluh Rimbo) is pursued through various empowerment programs. PT SAL strengthens the local economy through empowerment programs based on local potential. The company organized a Suluh Rimbo program with the SAD community in Bukit Suban Village, Sarolangun Regency, and South Tabir District, Merangin Regency, to support food security.mer groups involving the SAD community and residents of Pematang Kabau Village, providing mentoring through to the utilization of the harvest.

As the year ended, recognition was given to initiatives that have consistently delivered meaningful impact.

PT Sari Aditya Loka (SAL), a palm oil plantation company in Jambi Province, received a certificate of appreciation as a Stunting Prevention Foster Parent (GENTING) from the Jambi Provincial National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN).

The award was presented on Thursday, December 19, at the Old Regent’s Office in Merangin Regency.

This recognition reflects PT SAL’s active involvement in stunting prevention, a persistent health challenge for human resource development in Indonesia, rather than just administrative participation.

The certificate of appreciation was presented directly by the Deputy Regent of Merangin, Drs. H. Abdul Khafidh, M.M., and received by Fenti Rakhmawati as a representative of PT SAL.

“Thank you and congratulations to PT SAL,” the Deputy Regent stated. This event is part of ongoing local government efforts to strengthen collaboration between government and businesses to reduce stunting rates at the community level.

In the company’s operational area, particularly in Merangin Regency, this commitment is realized through continuous mentoring of vulnerable community groups, including the Suku Anak Dalam (SAD) community, which lives with limited access to healthcare and nutrition.

Efforts include providing supplementary feeding (PMT) for children in the SAD community, supporting Posyandu activities to monitor toddler growth, and facilitating health checks for pregnant women to prevent stunting from pregnancy onward.

This approach centers on the family, with particular emphasis on the first 1,000 days of a child’s life.

PT SAL’s CSR Assistant, Slamet Riyadi, stated that the BKKBN award reinforces the company’s commitment to social development.

Preventing stunting is not solely the government’s responsibility; businesses also play a vital role. “This award motivates us to continue implementing sustainable social programs that directly impact children’s growth and family well-being,” he said.

Stunting affects more than child height; it also impacts long-term quality of life, including learning ability and future productivity.

Collaboration among stakeholders is essential to address these challenges, particularly in areas with complex geographical and social conditions.

Through the GENTING program, PT SAL consistently supports family health and nutritional fulfillment, and provides assistance to families at risk of stunting in its operational areas.

The company will continue to collaborate with local governments, healthcare workers, and other stakeholders to help foster a healthier, stronger, and higher-quality generation.

By ending the year with this recognition, PT SAL emphasizes that development is measured not only by economic achievements, but also by the company’s ability to make a positive difference in the future of Indonesian children.

The company received two awards: “Special Recognition on Carbon Sequestration” and “Special Recognition on Biodiversity Progress” from PT Astra International Tbk, in acknowledgment of its consistent sustainability programs and innovations throughout the year.

“This recognition motivates us to further strengthen our commitment to sustainability across all company operations. We believe responsible business practices are essential for the long-term sustainability of the palm oil industry,” said Susila Darma Wati, Vice President of Sustainability, in her official statement on Monday, December 9, 2025.

She added that sustainability practices in the palm oil industry are not just a trend but are embedded in the company’s values, as demonstrated by Astra’s 2030 Sustainability Aspiration. This commitment ensures that sustainability principles are integrated into business strategy, human resource management, and social and environmental initiatives.

Astra Agro received the “Special Recognition on Carbon Sequestration” award through its Nature-Based Solution (NBS) program.

Through this program, Astra Agro is planting trees at PT Pandjiwaringin to actively absorb atmospheric carbon emissions. The company is planting 10 types of high carbon-absorbing forest trees, including Mahogany, Meranti Bunga, and Teak.

Astra Agro will measure and verify carbon absorption through the SPE-GRK (Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Certificate) scheme to support Net Zero Emissions targets. By 2030, the company projects this program will absorb up to 34,000 tons of CO₂eq.

In addition to its achievements in reducing carbon emissions, Astra Agro received the “Special Recognition on Biodiversity Progress” award for its biodiversity management. This demonstrates that oil palm plantation operations can align with environmental conservation.

Astra International recognizes that Astra Agro has maintained a balance between business operations and biodiversity protection. This is demonstrated by the completion of High Conservation Value (HCV) studies by all Astra Agro subsidiaries, reflecting the company’s commitment to sustainable practices.

Astra Agro’s commitment and conservation practices serve as a model within the Astra Group. In September, Astra Agro partnered with the Center for Transdisciplinary and Sustainability Sciences (CTSS) of IPB University to conduct training on technical competence and conservation implementation in plantation landscapes, attended by 25 participants from various Astra Group entities.

This achievement further highlights PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk.’s commitment to integrating sustainability principles across all operations. Through a nature-based approach to carbon reduction and planned biodiversity management, Astra Agro continues to set a benchmark for sustainable practices within the Astra Group.

The students performed confidently on stage, presenting a range of artistic works that conveyed messages of values and character development.

Wearing colorful costumes, the students performed dances, songs, and short dramas that addressed themes such as anti-bullying, cultural diversity, and healthy lifestyles. Through artistic expression, students were encouraged to learn about empathy, courage, and the importance of appreciating differences in an engaging and age-appropriate manner.

This activity serves as a form of contextual learning, encouraging students to collaborate, build public speaking skills, and develop social awareness from an early age. The presence and support of parents created a warm and welcoming atmosphere while strengthening collaboration between the school and families.

The art performance received positive recognition from the District Coordinator for Education in Koto Gasib District, Sutikno, who attended the event to observe the students’ performances.

Sutikno emphasized that learning occurs not only within the classroom but also through direct experiences that foster students’ self-confidence and social development.

“Art performances such as this represent the culmination of a series of learning activities designed to showcase the development of students’ talents and creativity. Furthermore, the event reinforces essential character values that children can apply in their daily lives,” he stated on Friday, December 19, 2025.

In addition to education officials from Koto Gasib District, the event was attended by representatives from PT Kimia Tirta Utama (KTU), the palm oil plantation company that manages the school. Attendees included PT KTU Administrator Teddy Yohendra Siregar, Head of Administration Arief Fadillah Lubis, Community Development Officer A Hardiman, CSR Assistant Eri Apriadi, and members of the PT KTU Employee Wives Association (Periska).

PT KTU Administrator Teddy Yohendra Siregar stated that the art performance serves as an expression of appreciation for the students’ learning and development, as well as a demonstration of the company’s commitment to supporting education in its operational area.

“This activity represents an appreciation of the students’ efforts and achievements. We extend our gratitude to the principal, teachers, students, and parents for their support in organizing this event,” he said.

Teddy explained that the art and creativity exhibition is an annual school event conducted as part of the Astra Education Program. “We hope this event will continue to be held and its quality enhanced each year,” he said.

The Art and Creativity Exhibition, featuring students from Awal Mulia Kindergarten and Kimia Tirta Utama Elementary School, demonstrates that character education can be effectively instilled through creative and enjoyable methods. Through this activity, the school aims to remain a safe, inclusive, and inspiring learning environment that shapes students to be characterized, creative, and competitive.
